Fact check: Claim that Chinese FDI into India has increased is fake

New Delhi (NVI): A claim is being made on social media that the Chinese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India has increased from $2.8 bn in 2017 to $4.14 bn in 2019.

Debunking such claims, the Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) clarified that the claim is fake and incorrect.

The inflow of FDI from China has declined from $0.350 bn in 2017 to $0.163 bn in 2019, it stated.

The data being shared on social media claimed that in the UPA era, Chinese FDI into India was $0.3 bn in 2011, $0.31 bn in 2012 and $2.7 bn in 2013. Meanwhile, in Modi era, Chinese FDI was $2.8 bn in 2017, $3.94 bn in 2018 and $4.14 bn in 2019.

The Press Information Bureau launched this fact-checking arm in December 2019, to curb misinformation and fake news prevalent on the internet. It claimed that its objective was “to identify misinformation related to government’s policies and schemes that are circulating on various social media platforms”.
