New Delhi (NVI): Canada has become the 23rd country in the world to surpass a million confirmed Covid-19 cases, according to global tally of coronavirus cases by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
The country has crossed the 1 million mark just over an year into the pandemic.
Canada’s overall Covid case count stands at 1,000,550, as of 7:20 p.m. ET (Eastern Time), as per a Global News report.
Of those cases, at least 921,200 have recovered, while another 23,051 people have died, reports the Canadian news website.
The country is also trying to contain a growing third wave of the pandemic which is emerging largely by more contagious variants of the virus, as per the news report.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had declared in September last year that the country was hit by the second wave of Covid-19.
Canada is fighting the third wave of pandemic currently, with new Covid cases rising especially in more populous provinces of British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario and Alberta.
The million milestone was also reached after the Canadian province of British Columbia added 2,090 more cases yesterday.
Health officials in Canada have warned that the more transmissible variants have led to a dramatic rise in infections among younger Canadians, particularly in those aged 20 to 39, according to Global News.
