New Delhi: On the 22nd anniversary of India’s military victory over Pakistan in Kargil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today led the nation in hailing the valour of Indian armed forces and paying tributes to the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice during the conflict in 1999.
‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ is celebrated every year on this day to mark India’s victory in ‘Operation Vijay’ in 1999, undertaken to throw out Pakistani army which had intruded and captured mountain heights in Drass-Kargil sectors of Ladakh.
Remembering the valour and sacrifice of the soldiers, Prime Minister says their bravery motivates us every single day.
He also shared an excerpt from his last year’s monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
In a tweet, he said, “We remember their sacrifices. We remember their valour. Today, on Kargil Vijay Diwas we pay homage to all those who lost their lives in Kargil protecting our nation. Their bravery motivates us every single day.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt paid tribute to fallen soldiers at National War Memorial on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Ministry of Defence said.
In his message in the visitors’ book at the National War Memorial, Rajnath Singh recalled the valour of the bravehearts of the Kargil conflict, saying that nation will never forget the sacrifice made by the gallant heroes of the Indian Armed Forces.
The grateful nation will always be indebted to their courage and continue to follow their ideals, he added.
In a tweet, Defence Minister said, “On the occasion of #KargilVijayDiwas2021, I visited the National War Memorial in New Delhi and paid tributes to those brave soldiers who fought valiantly and laid down their lives for the nation.”
Their supreme sacrifice will always be remembered and inspire coming generations, he said.
He also shared a video message on Twitter in which he was seen saluting the valour and sacrifice of the brave Indian soldiers.
MoS Defence Ajay Bhatt, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, Chief of the Army Staff General MM Naravane, Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar and Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain also paid homage to the fallen heroes at the National War Memorial on the occasion.
Senior civil and military officials of the Ministry of Defence were also present on the occasion, the Ministry said.
During the Kargil conflict, the gallant soldiers of the Indian Army, with the help of the Indian Air Force, overcame insurmountable odds, hostile terrain and inclement weather to win against the enemy that had occupied dominating heights.
On this momentous occasion, the proud nation is celebrating the victory by remembering the fallen heroes through various events across the country.
