Srinagar, Aug 31 (NVI): The counting of votes for the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana will now take place on October 8 instead of October 4, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced today.

The counting date has been shifted because the single-day polling in Haryana has been rescheduled from October 1 to October 5, it said.

There will be no change in the polling dates of Jammu and Kashmir, i.e., September 18, September 25 and October 1.

In the case of J&K, only the date of counting of votes has been shifted from October 4 to October 8.

In a statement, the ECI referred to its earlier announcement whereby single-day polling in Haryana was to be held on October 1 along with the third phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir.

It said subsequently, representations were received from National Political parties, State party and All India Bishnoi Mahasabha regarding mass movement of people of Bishnoi community of Haryana to Rajastahan to participate in centuries old Asoj Amavasya festival celebrations.

“It may deny voting rights to a large number of people and may lead to reduce voters’ participation in general elections to the legislative assembly of Haryana,” the ECI statement said.

“The Commission having considered these representations has decided to change the date of poll only for Haryana from October 1 (Tuesday) to October 5 (Saturday),” it said.

“Date of completion of elections for both J&K and Haryana will be October 10 ,” the statement said— (NVI)
