Jammu, Mar 28 (NVI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday flagged off the first-ever international marathon in Jammu and also joined participants in the run, underscoring the government’s push to promote sports and tourism in the region.

The marathon was flagged off from Maulana Azad Stadium and saw enthusiastic participation from athletes, fitness enthusiasts and locals across the Union Territory.

Actor Milind Soman and actor Gul Panag also took part in the event, adding to its appeal and encouraging wider public engagement.

The event was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department as part of efforts to position Jammu as a hub for major sporting events and outdoor activities.

Participants, including international runners, welcomed the initiative. A runner from Kenya said the race was a good start despite weather challenges, adding that future editions could see further improvements.

Locals described the marathon as a positive step, noting that such events promote fitness, community participation and tourism.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Satish Sharma said the government is committed to strengthening sports infrastructure in Jammu and plans to host more large-scale sporting events in the coming years, aimed at providing better opportunities for youth.(NVI)
