Ganderbal, Jun 5 (NVI): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday said the ongoing anti-drug drive in the Union Territory has evolved into a mass movement against narco-terrorism, with over 1,100 drug smugglers arrested and more than 1,000 FIRs registered during the past 55 days.

Addressing a gathering after joining the ‘Nasha-Mukt Jammu Kashmir Campaign’ and a padyatra in Ganderbal district, Sinha said the administration was determined to eliminate the drug menace and dismantle narco-terror networks operating in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Having now visited every district in Kashmir Valley and stood with each march, I can say that a historic movement against narco-terrorism has risen,” the lieutenant governor said.

Sharing details of the campaign, he said that in the last 55 days, 1,036 FIRs have been registered, 1,128 drug smugglers arrested and more than 100 properties linked to drug traffickers attached.

He said nearly 700 driving licences had been cancelled, while recommendations had been made for cancellation of passports of 130 drug smugglers.

Sinha said the campaign, launched from Jammu 55 days ago, had transformed from a government initiative into a people’s movement aimed at protecting youth from drugs and preventing narco-terrorists from exploiting society.

Describing drug trafficking as a threat to national security, he said proceeds from the illegal trade were being used to fund terrorism and purchase weapons.

“This is not simply a matter of ordinary crime but also a question of national security and a direct threat to the very survival of our society,” he said.

The lieutenant governor warned that those involved in narco-terrorism, whether operating from within Jammu and Kashmir or from across the border, would face stringent action.

He also assured rehabilitation and support for those affected by drug addiction through treatment, counselling and employment opportunities.

Calling upon women and youth to actively participate in the campaign, Sinha urged them to act as protectors of their communities and educational institutions against the drug menace.

On the occasion, the lieutenant governor launched “Sindh Samvad”, a podcast series, and felicitated winners of various competitions organised under the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan. (NVI)
