Srinagar, June 9 (NVI): Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district have recovered an additional pistol, magazines and live ammunition during the investigation of an illegal arms possession case, officials said on Tuesday.

The case came to light on June 7 when Baramulla Police, along with the Army’s 52 Rashtriya Rifles, intercepted a vehicle at a mobile vehicle checking point at Chandsuma in Kanispora area and recovered a foreign-made pistol from a passenger, they said.

The accused, identified as Wakeel Ahmed Theekri, a resident of Kamalkot in Uri, was unable to produce any valid licence or authorization for possessing the weapon, officials said.

Police said a Turkish-made CANIK TP9SF METE pistol was seized from his possession, following which an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Arms Act at Police Station Baramulla.

During further investigation, a search operation was conducted on June 8 at Kalsi Hardu in Kamalkot, Uri, on the disclosure of the arrested accused, officials said.

The search, carried out in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and local revenue officials, led to the recovery of a Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 13 live rounds of ammunition, they said.

Officials said the latest recovery indicates possible links to a wider illegal arms possession network. Efforts are underway to trace the source of the weapons and identify any other persons involved in the case.

Further investigation is in progress, police added.(NVI)
