Srinagar, July 12 (NVI): Several hotels and houses were affected after flash floods triggered by intense rainfall inundated parts of Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said on Sunday.
According to officials, a spell of heavy rain, suspected to have been caused by a localized cloudburst in the forest areas of Awoora and Dehwathu on Saturday evening, led to a sudden surge in a stream flowing towards the Lidder Nallah at Batkoot, resulting in flash floods.
At least half a dozen hotels were inundated, following which tourists staying there were safely rescued and shifted to alternative accommodations. Some buildings also suffered structural damage, including the collapse of boundary walls, they said.
Several residential houses were also affected as floodwaters entered the premises, causing damage to property.
Officials said the area received intense rainfall between 6 pm and 9:30 pm, with the flash flood occurring around 8 pm to 9 pm.
They added that water levels in the Sheshnag Nallah and the Lidder Nallah rose significantly following the heavy rainfall but remained below the respective alarm levels.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.(NVI)
