New Delhi, Aug 27 (NVI) India has sent relief material to Nepal where sudden floods have caused large scale destruction and devastation, besides killing many people.
Two Indian consignments of urgently required items were airlifted today to Nepal as the Himalayan country scrambled to meet the mammoth emergency.
Nepal Prime Minister and Foreign Minister have thanked India for its assistance as authorities continue search and rescue operations across flood-affected areas.
The floods, which hit central parts of Nepal bordering Tibet, caused widespread destruction with structures, including houses and bridges, being swept away.
Hundreds of people, including Indians, were missing after the deluge and efforts are underway to trace them.
The affected areas include the route to Kailash Mansarovar, located in Tibet, and many Indian pilgrims were on that yatra when the floods struck.
Surendra Thapa, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Nepal Embassy in New Delhi, said the immediate priority was to locate missing people, save lives and provide assistance to those affected.
“Given the scale of this tragedy and the number of people who remain unaccounted for, including foreign nationals from several countries, our immediate priority is search and rescue, saving lives and providing assistance to those affected,” Thapa said.
He added that authorities were making every effort to locate and assist those affected while working to verify the situation, with further updates expected as rescue operations continue.
Several Indian state governments, including Sikkim, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Odisha, have also issued helplines to assist people affected by the floods and those seeking information about their relatives.
The relief efforts come as Nepal continues to assess the extent of the devastation, with rescue teams working to reach affected communities and account for people who remain untraceable. (NVI)
