Jammu, Sep 22 (NVI) : Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday said technology must remain humanity’s servant and warned that artificial intelligence should not be allowed to take decisions affecting human dignity, livelihood, health and freedom.
Sinha made the remarks while inaugurating several facilities at the University of Jammu, including a modern sports complex, shooting range, high-mast lights at the cricket stadium and the Tawi Guest House complex, developed at a cost of nearly Rs 10 crore.
Congratulating the university authorities and other stakeholders, the LG said the new facilities would empower athletes, scholars and visitors and further strengthen the institution as a centre of excellence.
Addressing the gathering, Sinha raised questions about the meaning of education in the age of artificial intelligence and cautioned against the unchecked use of the technology.
“Technology must remain humanity’s servant, never its master,” he said, adding that AI, as a “quadruple-use” technology, could operate independently and produce both beneficial and harmful outcomes.
“Decisions affecting human dignity, livelihood, health, and freedom must always be made by accountable humans, not machines,” Sinha said.
He said machines could calculate and predict but could not feel or bear responsibility for decisions.
“My clear view is that every decision that deeply affects a person’s freedom, livelihood, health, education, or dignity must have a human behind it, who understands the decision, accepts responsibility for it, and can be held accountable,” he said.
Sinha outlined five challenges before higher education, including the need to rapidly adapt curricula, move away from rote learning, focus classrooms on application and purpose, encourage original thinking and ensure technology does not widen the gap between rural and urban learners.
He said technology could not replace teachers but would change their role.
“The teacher of the future will not merely be an information-giver; they will be a mentor, a guru, a questioner, and an inspiring personality who ignites curiosity and builds character,” Sinha said.
The LG also urged students and teachers to embrace lifelong learning, cultivate creativity and empathy, build bridges across disciplines, contribute to national development, balance academics with sports and remain rooted in traditions and values.
He said powerful technologies could achieve great work when used responsibly but could also cause serious harm in the wrong hands.
“In the age of AI, the modern tools and machines have become more powerful than ever, and so the hands that wield it must possess greater steadiness, values, Sanskar, and wisdom,” Sinha said.
University of Jammu Vice Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, IGP Jammu Tejinder Singh, DIG JSK Range Shridhar Patil, Deputy Commissioner Jammu Rakesh Minhas, Dean Academic Affairs Prof J P Singh Joorel, faculty members and students were present on the occasion.—(NVI)
