Srinagar (NVI): Voting for the crucial Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections is underway across the Leh district in the Union Territory of Ladakh, officials said today.
An official said that the voting started at 8 am. He further said that elaborate security arrangements have been made and sufficient number of officials have been deployed at all the polling stations to ensure hassle-free voting.
As many as 94 candidates are in fray which includes 26 each from BJP and Congress while 19 candidates are fighting on Aam Aadmi Party ticket and 23 are independent.
Additional deputy commissioner Leh, Sonam Chosjor told NVI that people are coming out in large numbers to exercise their franchise. “Elaborate security and administrative arrangements are in place for smooth conduct of polls,” he said.
A member of BJP said that Member of Parliament (MP) Jamyang Namgyal early this morning casted his vote at his native area in Leh.
Pertinently, LAHDC polls are being held for the first time after Ladakh was declared as UT on August 5, 2019. Dozens of union ministers took part in campaigning in Leh recently to seek votes for the BJP.
