Fashion Show Choreographers are the brains behind fashion shows. From directing the catwalks of the models to selecting music to arranging lights, stage, backdrop and the backstage relating to a fashion show – they take care of minutest details.

While Fashion Show Choreographers are the professionals who shoulder the responsibility of presenting a designer’s dream creation before the select audience comprising prospective buyers and media persons. They have to ensure that the mood and feel of the designer’s collections are well represented while models sashay down the ramp.

” We are now Fashion Show Directors rather than merely being Fashion Show Choreographers. And it is apt too. We direct different teams of people who are assigned various roles and responsibilities – from making proper light and sound arrangements, suitable make-up of models, eye-catching presentation of dresses, enticing look of the stage and the backdrop,” says Ajay Bist, who has directed many fashion shows for reputed brands and organisations. He is also teaching Creative Direction and Styling at Karnavati Univeristy, Gujarat.

” In fact, for a 15 mts show, we start working one and half or two months in advance, just like in films where work on a 2.30 hrs film takes over two years to complete. For different dresses such as ethnic, western or fusion of the two and for types of choreography such as promoting dresses, jewellery or accessories, we use altogether different light, sound, make-up arrangements and presentation techniques or styles too vary from one to other, ” he adds.

While each fashion designer likes to hold fashion shows to unveil their latest dress collections at the onset of a season or a little before it, various textile mills, readymade garment brands, leading companies in the field of jewellery, watches, shoes and other products too keep organising such shows to entice their customers.

A fashion show choreographer has also the option of starting a Modeling agency or a training Institute in the field. Their services are also utilised in holding beauty pageants where they train participants to walk perfectly on ramps or stages.

No formal qualification is required to become a fashion show choregrapher or fashion show director. However, a formal background in fashion is one of the pre-requisites for successful career in the field which they can acquire while working with fashion show choreographers as assistants or by taking admission in a fashion training institute.
