Coronavirus cases surge past 121.7 mn worldwide, death toll nears 2.7 mn

New Delhi (NVI): The global count of coronavirus cases has reached more than 121.7 million, with over 2,690,000 deaths reported. Over 68.9 million patients have been cured of the deadly contagion, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus infection has reached to more than 29.6 million, while the total number of COVID-19 fatalities have surpassed 5,39,000 in the country.

Brazil registered its second deadliest day in its Covid pandemic, with 2,724 deaths, according to the Health Ministry. The country recorded 86,982 new cases.

With this, Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 11.7 million-mark and stand at 11,780,820 while the number of deaths has surged past 2,87,000.

Furthermore, China reported 11 new Covid cases on March 18, and confirmed one locally transmitted infection in Shaanxi province, marking China’s first local Covid case since February 14.

Meanwhile, Cuba’s drug regulatory authority on Thursday approved a second Covid vaccine candidate for late-stage clinical trials as the country races to secure a homegrown shot to quell its worst outbreak since the start of the pandemic

French Prime Minister Jean Castex on Thursday announced a limited month-long lockdown for Paris and several other regions to combat surging Covid-19 cases, while insisting the measures would be less strict than in the past.
