Coronavirus cases surpass 105 million globally; death toll tops 2.29 mn

New Delhi (NVI): The global count of coronavirus cases has reached more than 105 million, and the death toll stands at 2,296,700, while over 58.3 million patients have been cured and recovered from the contagion, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

In the United States, the total number of coronavirus cases have reached more than 26.8 million while the total number of COVID-19 fatalities have surpassed 4,59,200 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases has surpassed 9.4 million and stands at 9,447,165 while the country accounts for the second highest number of COVID-19 fatalities at 2,30,034

Meanwhile, the health ministry of Mexico has reported 1,368 new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total in the country to 164,290. The overall coronavirus tally in the country stands at 18,99,820.

France has registered 22,139 COVID-19 new cases in past 24 hours and 651 new fatalities, taking the overall caseload to 3.35 million with over 78,740 death toll in the country.

Furthermore, the authorities in Greece announced that the Covid-19 nationwide lockdown which started on November 7 is further extended to February 15, while an earlier night curfew and closure of retail stores on weekends is imposed in red zones of the country.

The World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that, the number of COVID-19 vaccinations around the world has now overtaken the number of reported infections.

In this regard, the WHO chief called upon the countries that have already vaccinated their high-risk groups, such as healthcare workers and the elderly, to share vaccines with other states.
