Srinagar, Dec 02(NVI): Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Farooq Abdullah today expressed concern over the growing sense of insecurity among Muslims in India.
Talking to reporters here, the former Chief Minister urged the central government to ensure equal treatment for all communities, in line with the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
He said: “There is no doubt that Muslims are feeling unsafe. I appeal to the Government of India to address this issue. The Constitution guarantees no discrimination based on religion. If that foundation is destroyed, where will India stand?” Abdullah said, referencing recent controversies surrounding religious sites.
He stressed that India cannot disregard its diverse population, stating, “The government must recognize that 24 crore Muslims are an integral part of this nation and cannot be marginalized.”
Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Masood criticized decisions by lower courts permitting surveys at religious sites, warning such actions could create unrest. “The Places of Worship Act, 1991, clearly prohibits altering the status of religious sites. The Supreme Court must take cognizance of this matter to prevent anarchy,” he stated.
In a related move, Congress leaders Alok Sharma and Priya Mishra filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking to restrain courts from entertaining such pleas. They urged strict compliance with the 1991 Act to safeguard communal harmony.
