Kargil (Ladakh): Authorities in Kargil district of Ladakh Union Territory have imposed a ban on the use of drones from July 24 to July 26 in view of the Kargil Vijay Divas, which is commemorated as India’s victory in a brief war with Pakistan in 1999.
The prohibition has been ordered particularly because the event is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Kargil Vijay Divas is planned to be celebrated in a magnificent manner this time, which is the 25th anniversary of the Victory Day.
The order, issued by the District Magistrate of Kargil, says the whole area/revenue limits of Sub Division Drass and Tehsil Kargil of District Kargil shall be “No Flying Zone” for the purpose of flying of drones.
The order shall not be applicable to security agencies including police, paramilitary, and SPG, the order clarifies.
Any person found violating the order shall be prosecuted and punished as per the provisions of the law, it says.
The order says the request for issuance of such a directive has come from SSP, Kargil, to reduce the apprehension of any risk to the security of V.V.I.Ps.
Much euphoria has already gripped the country about the occasion as it marks the befitting defeat handed over by India to Pakistan which thrust the 3-month-long war in May 1999.
The war took place after Pakistani army clandestinely crossed the Line of Control (LoC) or de facto border in Drass and Kargil sectors and captured mountain peaks overlooking the Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
India took around 3 months to retrieve control of all these peaks, killing over 600 Pakistani soldiers and forcing others to flee back.
