India records 1,61,736 new Covid cases, 879 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi (NVI): In yet another massive spike of Covid-19 cases, India recorded 1,61,736 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours. The overall tally has now climbed to 13,689,453, the Union Health Ministry confirmed today.

The death count climbed to 1,71,058 with the novel coronavirus virus claiming 879 lives during this period, the data showed.

Yesterday, India overtook Brazil to become the second-most affected nation in the world by the novel coronavirus.

India had recorded 1,68,912 new coronavirus cases. Apart from that, 904 new COVID-19 fatalities were reported across the country on Sunday.

Currently, more than 12.2 crore patients have been cured and recovered across the country and the total number of recoveries stands at 12,253,697.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 active caseload increased to 12,64,698 with an increase of 63,689 cases in the last 24 hours.

Of the 1,61,736 cases, India counted on Monday, more than 51,000 infections were reported from Maharashtra, while Delhi reported more than 11,000 cases.

The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (34,58,996), Kerala (11,72,882), Karnataka (10,74,869), Andhra Pradesh (9,28,664), and Tamil Nadu (9,40,145).
