India records over 3.14 lakh new Covid-19 cases for 1st time

New Delhi (NVI): For the first time, India reported 314,835 fresh coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours which pushed the country’s caseload to over 15.9 million. No country has recorded more cases in a single day. Deaths from the virus climbed to another high of 2,102 in the past 24 hours.

The death toll from the deadly infection stands at 184,672. The country now has over 2.3 million active cases.

India on Wednesday registered 2,95,041 new Covid-19 cases, and 2023 deaths.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in a tweet last night said the government has increased “quota of oxygen” for seven states- Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi.

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced stringent restrictions in the state due to a huge surge in the cases of coronavirus infections. The restrictions will come into effect from 8 PM on Thursday and will be in place till 7 AM on May 1, according to the state government’s order.

Even as many states have announced fresh restrictions to break the chain of transmission, PM Modi on Tuesday, while addressing the nation, said that “lockdown should be the last resort”.
