India reports 1,761 Covid deaths, 2.59 lakh fresh cases

New Delhi(NVI): India reported over 2.59 lakh fresh COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours which pushed the country’s caseload to over 15.3 million, according to the Union health ministry. India, however, reported the highest-ever single-day spike in Covid-related deaths with 1,761 fatalities. The death toll from the deadly infection stands at 180,550. The country now has over 2 million active cases.

Maharashtra reported 58,924 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally to over 38.98 lakh, while 351 fatalities pushed the death count to 60,824. In terms of the total caseload, Maharashtra is followed by Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The top five states that have registered the maximum cases in the past 24 hours are Maharashtra (58,924 cases), followed by Uttar Pradesh (28,211 cases), and Delhi (23,686 cases), Karnataka (15,785 cases) and Chhattisgarh (13,834 cases).

India is second only to the United States in the total number of cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic.
