A joint operation was launched yesterday by Police, 3RR of Army and CRPF’s 90Bn, based on an input regarding presence of terrorists hiding in a house in Semthan village in Bijbehara.
Terrorists hiding in the house opened indiscriminate fire which was retaliated. All the civilians trapped in the gunfire were evacuated to safety and the operation was halted for the night, police said.
The operation was resumed this morning and both the terrorists were killed in exchange of fire. “They were given ample opportunities to surrender and face the law. Two AK series rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of killed terrorists,” read an official statement.
The slain terrorists were identified as Towseef Ahmad Bhat, resident of Takia Maqbool Shah in Bijbehara and Aamir Hussain Ganie, resident of Goriwan in Bijbehara, Anantnag. While Towseef was active since 2017, Aamir had joined terrorist ranks in the 2018, as per the official statement.
According to police, both of them were wanted in many terror crimes including in the killing of an off-duty Territorial Army solider- Mohamamd Saleem Akhoon who was shot dead by them near his home in Goriwan Bijbehara on Friday.
After the incident, round the clock track teams set out to track the assailants and down to bring them to justice. The teams finally zeroed in on them, resulting in encounter.
They were also wanted in a case at PS Bijbehara, registered last year after an attack on CRPF party in which one CRPF jawan was killed. The killed duo also had been threatening and intimidating the civilian population of the area and enticing the young boys to join terror ranks.
Their dead bodies have been sent for burial in presence of family members after medico legal formalities.
In Hadipora encounter, two more terrorists were gunned down by security forces, taking the toll to three. Yesterday, one terrorist was killed in the encounter with security forces in the area. The search operation is still underway.
“#ShopianEncounterUpdate: 02 more #unidentified #terrorists killed (toll 03). #Search going on. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir zone police said in a tweet.

The police further said that despite numerous efforts made for surrender of a recruited terrorist, other terrorists didn’t allow him to do so, and eventually he was killed.
“Police & security forces made sincere efforts to take surrender of newly recruited #terrorist. Parents also made appeals but other terrorists didn’t allowed him to #surrender. IGP Kashmir,” Kashmir Zone police said in another tweet.
