Srinagar (NVI): Security forces today defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Tappar area Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said.

They said that the IED was planted by the militants near a petrol pump at Tappar area of Pattan in Baramulla district.

Joint teams of security forces spotted a suspicious object on the road side and after a thorough check, it was found that a powerful IED was planted by the militants with an aim to target forces convoy, officials said.

A police official said that the bomb disposal squads of army and police rushed to the spot and later defused the IED successfully. “The IED has wiring all over and had many circuits that were cut successfully,” he said.

The development comes at a time when Director General of Police J&K, Dilbagh Singh has already put the entire security grid in Kashmir on a high alert for the ensuing fortnight, after inputs about militant strikes on the occasion of first anniversary of abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of erstwhile state into two Union Territories (UTs)—J&K and Ladakh.

While security agencies are maintaining highest level of alert, Srinagar district of Kashmir is under tight grip of curfew imposed by the administration.

On Monday, district administration Srinagar, headed by deputy commissioner Srinagar Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary announced that police report suggested possibility of protests by the separatist and anti-national elements, and to prevent loss of life and property, restrictions/curfew will remain in force across Srinagar on August 4 and 5.
