Srinagar, Sep 23 (NVI) : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the government is implementing a scientific, multi-pronged strategy to address the stray dog population in the Union Territory.
Responding to a question in the Legislative Assembly, Abdullah said measures include systematic sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination of stray animals under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) programmes.
He said the capacity of existing ABC facilities is being augmented, while new centres are being established and dedicated veterinary staff deployed across Urban Local Bodies.
Anti-rabies treatment is also being made available at health facilities under the National Rabies Control Programme, while solid waste management systems are being strengthened and regulated feeding points introduced to reduce open food sources, the chief minister said.
Abdullah has also approved the creation of dedicated Expert Animal Birth Control verticals under the Jammu Smart City Limited and Srinagar Smart City Limited.
The initiative will involve hiring specialised manpower trained in modern ABC protocols and deploying them across Urban Local Bodies to tackle the stray dog population through scientific interventions, he said.—(NVI)
