Kargil (Ladakh), Aug 11 (NVI The much-hyped protest by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) in Kargil district of Ladakh has turned out to be lackluster affair, leaving the organisers to look for excuses.
The KDA, demanding various things, held a three-day ‘hunger strike’ which ended today but it failed to attract much support from the masses.
At the centre of this programme was Sonam Wangchuk, the self-styled Ladakhi activist who craves for spotlight and organises such events from time to time.
Ahead of the event yesterday, rumours were spread about the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk, ostensibly to generate sympathy for him and arouse public emotions in the sensitive Union Territory bordering China and Pakistan.
It is believed that Sonam Wangchuk is trying, through such events, to generate support for himself, possibly to contest elections.
There have been murmurs earlier that it was Sonam Wangchuk who pressurized Thupstan Chhewang to resign from the Apex Body to take the charge himself. Earlier, he had described the same Thupstang Chhewang as the ‘Gandhi of Ladakh’. (NVI)
