Srinagar, Jan 14(NVI): A devastating road accident in Kargil’s Shilikchey area today claimed five lives and left two others critically injured when a Scorpio and a tipper collided head-on.

The impact was so severe that both vehicles plunged into a deep gorge, prompting an immediate rescue operation by locals and authorities.

According to officials, the victims were rushed to the nearest hospital, where five were declared dead on arrival. The two injured individuals remain in critical condition and are receiving intensive medical care.

The deceased includes three locals identified as Mohd Hassan, son of Mohd Hussain, a resident of Stakpa; Liyaqat Ali, son of A.K. Raza, a resident of Choskore; and Mohd Ibrahim, son of Haji Mohd, a resident of Badgam, Kargil. The identities of the other two victims, who are believed to be non-locals, are yet to be ascertained.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred on a steep and narrow stretch of the road, which may have contributed to the vehicles losing control after the collision. Rescue efforts were challenging due to the vehicles falling into the gorge.

Authorities have registered a case, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest speeding or reckless driving may have played a role in the tragedy.

This accident has once again highlighted the need for improved road safety measures and infrastructure in hilly regions like Kargil, where such incidents are becoming alarmingly frequent.(News Vibes of India)
