Srinagar: Weeks ahead of the annual Amarnath yatra, three terrorists were today killed in a gunfight with security forces in a mountainous area on the pilgrimage route in Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The encounter took place at Sirchand Top in Pahalgam during an anti-terrorist operation carried out by the security forces, the police said.
The gun battle erupted when terrorists fired upon a team of security personnel which was approaching towards their hiding spot, the police said.
The security forces retaliated, resulting in the killing of three terrorists, affiliated to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit.
One of them was identified as Ashraf Molvi, one of oldest surviving terrorist of the outfit, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.
“#Successful #operation on yatra route is a major #success for us,” the IGP tweeted.
Shri Amarnath Yatra, which is an annual affair, is set to begin on June 30.
After a gap of two years caused by Covid, the pilgrimage this time will be physical.
The government and security agencies are regularly reviewing protective mechanisms for the pilgrimage which will last 40 days.
