Leh, Apr 27 (NVI): Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday approved the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, taking the total number of districts in the region to seven, officials said.
In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor termed the move a “historic day” for Ladakh and said it fulfils a long-pending demand and aspirations of the people.
“With the creation of five new districts — Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass — Ladakh will now have seven districts from the existing two,” he said.
Officials said the decision is aimed at improving administrative efficiency and ensuring better governance and service delivery in the geographically vast and sparsely populated region.
Ladakh, which was carved out as a Union Territory in 2019, currently has two districts — Leh and Kargil. The addition of five new districts is expected to bring governance closer to the people and accelerate development in remote areas.
