Modi holds phone conversation with Trump

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today had a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders expressed desire to enhance and deepen the bilateral ties.

Modi made the phone call to convey New Year greetings to Trump, his family and the people of the US, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Significantly, the conversation between the two leaders took place amid heightening tensions between the US and Iran but the MEA statement did not say whether the issue was discussed between them.

“The Prime Minister stated that India-US relations, which are built on trust, mutual respect and understanding, have grown from strength to strength,” the MEA statement said.

“The Prime Minister highlighted the significant progress made in deepening the Strategic Partnership between the two countries in the previous year and expressed his desire to continue to work with  President Trump for enhancing cooperation in all areas of mutual interest,” the statement added.

Trump wished the people of India prosperity and progress in the New Year.

“He (Trump) expressed satisfaction at the achievements in the relationship in the last few years and reiterated his readiness for further deepening bilateral cooperation,” the statement said.
