New Delhi (NVI): The Lok Sabha today passed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021, with the Centre saying that it has been brought to end ambiguity in running the affairs of the national capital.

The Bill technically extends powers to Delhi LG. Meanwhile, the Central Government has appealed to everyone not to term it a “political move”.

Union Minister of State for Home, G Kishan Reddy said that the bill was necessary to avoid ambiguities in certain issues related to the functioning of the Delhi Government. Reddy, who initiated the debate on the bill, also said that several cases were also filed in courts on the matter.

However, the Aam Aadmi Party has been opposing the bill. Soon after the bill was passed, AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that it is an “insult” to the people of Delhi.

“Passage of GNCTD amendment Bill in Lok Sabha today is an insult to the people of Delhi. The Bill effectively takes away powers from those who were voted by people and gives powers to run Delhi to those who were defeated. BJP has cheated the people,” he tweeted.
