Srinagar, Dec 31( NVI): Road safety continues to be a growing concern in Srinagar, with 4 lakh traffic challans issued this year alone and a tragic toll of 57 lives lost in road traffic accidents.

The alarming statistics highlight the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures and strict enforcement of traffic rules in the city.

The figures, released by local authorities, underline the city’s increasing traffic congestion and unsafe driving practices. Notorious Drug Peddler booked under PIT NDPS Act by Srinagar Police

Srinagar, Dec 31 (NVI) Srinagar Police have booked Shakeel Ahmad Sheikh, also known as Shakeel Kano, a notorious drug peddler, under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT NDPSA).

Police said that a resident of Pamposh Colony, Noorbagh Srinagar, Kano is a habitual offender with a long history of involvement in drug trafficking.

Following a detailed dossier compiled by the Srinagar Police, a PIT NDPSA warrant was issued, leading to the detention of the accused in District Jail Udhampur. Shakeel Kano had previously been implicated in drug-related activities, including a case registered under FIR No. 131/2022 at Police Station Safakadal, under the NDPS Act. Despite being subjected to preventive measures on multiple occasions, he persisted in his illegal dealings, endangering society, particularly the youth.

Known for his active role in the narcotics trade, Kano has been involved in procuring and distributing drugs, primarily targeting the youth of Srinagar. His actions have contributed to the growing drug menace, causing significant harm to the community.

Police seize properties worth Rs 1 Cr in major crackdown on drug trafficking in Anantnag

Anantnag, Dec 30 (NVI): In a decisive move against the growing menace of narcotics, Anantnag Police have attached properties worth Rs 1 crore under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, targeting individuals involved in drug trafficking.

A single-storey residential house and one Kanal of land, valued at Rs 20 lakhs, have been attached.

The property belongs to Bilal Ahmad Rather, son of Wali Mohammad Rather.

Bilal is implicated in FIR No. 57/2021 under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act following the recovery of a significant quantity of narcotics.

A residential house built on a one-Kanal plot, valued at Rs 40 lakhs, has been attached.

The property is owned by Mohammad Ashraf Ganaie, son of Mohammad Ramzan Ganaie.

He is involved in FIR No. 99/2021 under the NDPS Act, linked to the recovery of contraband substances.

A residential house valued at Rs 40 lakhs has been seized. The property belongs to Rouf Ahmad Nanda, son-in-law of Gul Mohammad Tantray. He is implicated in FIR No. 34/2022 under Sections 8/15-29 of the NDPS Act.

The attached properties will remain under the custody of authorities until the completion of legal proceedings. The police have emphasized that such actions are intended to disrupt the financial networks of drug traffickers and deliver a stern warning to those involved in the illegal trade.

In a statement, Anantnag Police appealed to the public to cooperate in the fight against drug trafficking. They urged citizens to report any information about drug-related activities, assuring confidentiality and prompt action.

J&K to skip New Year celebrations amid National mourning for former PM Manmohan Singh

CM Omar proposes renaming Navyug Tunnel to honour Dr. Manmohan Singh’s contributions to J&K

Srinagar, Dec 29 (NVI): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today advocated renaming the Navyug Tunnel, connecting Qazigund and Banihal on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, in honor of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Speaking to reporters on here, the Chief Minister highlighted Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in the development of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the four-laning of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. “The late Prime Minister’s vision and efforts have reduced the travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to just five hours. His contributions deserve lasting recognition,” Omar said.

He said that the development of the highway and its tunnels began during Dr. Singh’s tenure, crediting him for initiating transformative infrastructure projects. “While others may claim credit for the new tunnels, we must acknowledge that it was Dr. Manmohan Singh who laid the foundation for this progress,” he added.
