Coronavirus cases in Sri Lanka reach 523; 7 dead

New Delhi (NVI): Sri Lanka reported 63 new cases in the last 24 hours, raising the total number coronavirus cases to 523 in the country, according to the Health Ministry report.

Out of all the confirmed cases, a total of 95 sailors attached to the Welisara Navy Camp have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the National Operations Centre for Preventing COVID-19 Outbreak, according to media reports.

The camp has now been declared as an isolated zone. All entry and exit from the camp have been banned.

Meanwhile, 7 patients have died and 120 patients including the Chinese tourist, who was the first COVID-19 case detected in the country in January and discharged last month, have fully recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

Sri Lanka has been under a 24-hour curfew since March 20 to combat the deadly viral infection.

172 new COVID-19 cases in Afghanistan, total 1,703

New Delhi (NVI): A total of 172 new coronavirus cases have been reported in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, raising the total to 1,703, according to Afghan media reports.

In the last 24 hours, 600 samples of COVID-19 were tested from 18 provinces, out f which 172 were positive reports said.

Among the new cases, 34 were reported in Balkh, Herat (33), Kabul (27), Kandahar (21), Paktia (8), Baghlan (8), Kunduz (7), Sar-e-Pul (5), Ghor (5), Samangan (4), Nimruz (4), Faryab (4), Nangarhar (3), Laghman (3), Khost (3), Helmand (2), Paktia (1) and Panjshir (1) provinces.

According to the country’s health ministry, total of 8,694 samples have been tested so far.

57 people have died due to the COVID-19 and 220 others have recovered since the outbreak across the country.

Srinagar (NVI): Seven people including six children sustained serious injuries when an unexploded shell went off at Lower-Munda, Qazigund in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, where three militants were killed in an encounter this morning.

Eye-witnesses said that after the security forces left, people in large numbers including children rushed to the spot of encounter. “All of a sudden, a big explosion took place and there were shrieks and cries from all around as young kids were flat on the ground,” they said.

They said that seven persons including six children sustained injuries in the explosion. A police official said that the incident took place when a group of people was clearing debris at the house razed to the ground during an encounter early in the morning today.

“Soon after the incident, the injured were rushed to Primary Health Centre Qazigund for treatment. One injured boy was shifted to Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment,” an official said.

Police sources said that they are ascertaining the cause of the explosion. “We have registered a case and investigations have been started,” they said.

Covid-19 deaths reach 145 in Bangladesh; total 5,416 cases

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of deaths from coronavirus continues to rise in Bangladesh as 5 more people have died in the last 24 hours, taking the total casualties in the country to 145, according to United News of Bangladesh.

Besides, a whopping 309 new cases of coronavirus infection were reported during this period, raising the number of such cases in the country to 5,416.

Meanwhile, only 113 people have recoverd from the virus till date, making the recovery rate of Bangladesh lowest in the world.

Health experts have attributed this to a lengthy recovery period of the disease, lower follow-up tests, weakened immune system of elderly and other people with underlying health conditions and mismanagement in treatment.

In addition to this, the coronavirus has now sread to 60 districts of the country out of the 64 districts.

RBI announces Rs 50,000 crore liquidity facility for mutual funds

New Delhi (NVI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced Rs 50,000 crore liquidity facility support for mutual funds, to ease liquidity pressures on the funds amid Covid-19.

The facility will be effective from today till May 11, 2020 or up to utilization of the allocated amount, whichever is earlier, the RBI said in a statement today.

Under this facility, the RBI will provide funds to banks at lower rates and banks can avail funds for exclusively meeting the liquidity requirements of mutual funds.

The RBI will conduct repo operations of 90 days tenor at the fixer repo rate, under the liquidity facility effective from today.

This liquidity facility is on-tap and open-ended, and banks can submit their bids to avail funding on any day from Monday to Friday (excluding holidays).

Indian stock markets surged immediately after the RBI announced the facility for mutual funds, according to media reports.

The RBI said that stress is confined to high-risk debt mutual fund segment at this stage. “The larger industry remains liquid,” it further added.

New Delhi (NVI): As the country has entered in the 13th day of the extended lockdown, coronavirus cases keep on increasing, with the total confirmed cases at 27,892 with 872 fatalities so far, according to the Union Health Ministry.

After the first confirmed case in India, which was reported on January 30 in Kerala, the virus has tightened its grip over the entire nation.

COVID-19 cases climb to 13,749 in Pakistan; 286 dead so far

New Delhi (NVI): The number of confirmed cases due to coronavirus in Pakistan rose to 13,749 today while the total number of fatalities have gone up to 286.

Looking at the breakdown of cases, Punjab province has reported 5,526 coronavirus cases, highest among all the provinces, while Sindh has 4,956 positive cases.

On the other hand, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has recorded 1,864 cases, Balochistan is at 781, Gilgit-Baltistan at 318, Islamabad at 245 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is at 59 cases so far, according to Geo News.

Meanwhile, several clerics in the country have urged people to ignore anti-pandemic measures amid the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

In addition to this, implementing the lockdown is proving to be a challenge for Islamabad.

However, more than 3,000 people have recovered from the contagion in the country.

Danger of virus far from over, constant vigilance important: PM

New Delhi (NVI):  As per experts, the impact of coronavirus will remain visible in the coming months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today in a virtual interaction with Chief Ministers, while asserting that social distancing will help in winning the long battle against the pandemic.

PM Modi today held a meeting with state CMs via video to discuss the emerging situation and plan ahead for tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reiterating the mantra of ‘do gaz doori’, he said that “masks and face covers will become part of our lives in the days ahead”. He pointed out that many people are self-declaring whether they have cough and cold or symptoms, and that this is a welcome sign, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement after the meeting.

The Prime Minister also said that lockdown has yielded positive results as the country has managed to save thousands of lives in the past one and a half months.

“India’s population is comparable to that of the combined population of several countries. The situation in many countries, including India, was almost similar at the start of March. However, due to timely measures, India has been able to protect many people,” he said.

At the same time, he forewarned that the danger of the virus is far from over and constant vigilance is of paramount importance.

Chief Ministers of nine states– Meghalaya, Mizoram, Puducherry, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Haryana and Gujarat– participated during the virtual meeting, while the rest had the option to send the Chief Secretary as a representative.

The PM also said that the economy cannot be ignored as “we continue the fight against COVID-19”. He emphasized on the importance of usage of technology as much as possible and also to utilize time to embrace reform measures.

He emphasized on the significance of ensuring that more people download the AarogyaSetu app to bolster the efforts of the country in the battle against COVID-19.

He said: “we have to be brave and bring in reforms that touch the lives of common citizens.” He also suggested that people associated with Universities can be integrated on devising ways to fight the pandemic and strengthen research as well as innovation.

The PM highlighted the importance for states to enforce guidelines strictly in the hotspots i.e. the red zone areas. He stated that the efforts of the states should be directed towards converting the red zones into orange and thereafter to green zones.

The Prime Minister said that a final decision on the way forward can be taken only after May 3. He also indicated that lockdown will continue in hotspots while asking Chief Ministers to keep an action plan ready after considering the gravity of the situation in their respective states.

On the issue of getting back Indians who are overseas, the PM said that this has to be done keeping in mind the fact that they don’t get inconvenienced and their families are not under any risk. He also urged Chief Ministers to factor in the changes in weather – advent of summer and monsoon – and the illnesses that can potentially come in this season, while strategising ahead.

Home Minister Amit Shah, who also participated in the virtual interaction, reaffirmed the need to enforce lockdown so that maximum lives are saved.

During the meeting, the Chief Ministers highlighted the efforts undertaken by them in containing the virus. They spoke about the need to keep a close vigil on international borders, and also on addressing the economic challenge and ways to further boost health infrastructure. The leaders expressed gratitude towards the police force and medical staff for the exemplary work done by them in the fight against COVID-19.

This was the fourth such interaction of the Prime Minister with the Chief Ministers, the earlier ones had been held on 20th March, 2nd April and 11th April, 2020.

The 19-day extended lockdown will be over on May 3. The Centre has given some relaxations in the lockdown by allowing standalone shops across the country to open but restrictions are in place in containment zones.

J&K: 3 militants killed in Kulgam district; ops underway

Srinagar (NVI): Three militants were killed in a gunfight at Lower Munda area of Kashmir’s Kulgam district today, the Army officials said.

The news comes nearly 12 hours after the security forces killed four militants in an encounter in the same district.

A senior police officer said that the operation was concluded after the three militants were killed in Lower-Munda Qazigund. “The operation is over but searches are being conducted,” he said.

Earlier, a joint team of Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of police and CRPF, acting on specific information, launched a search operation. As the forces intensified the searches, the militants in hiding opened fire triggering an encounter.

Defence Spokesman in Srinagar Colonel Rajesh Kalia told NVI that three militants have been killed in the Lower Munda gunfight.  “Operation in the area is still going on,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the wake of encounter, the authorities in Kulgam district have snapped the internet services as a precautionary measure.

In the last 24 hours, five militants have been killed, whereas ever since the Covid-19 outbreak in Kashmir on March 18, 30 militants have been killed in various encounters so far.

 

Coronavirus cases nearing 3 million globally; Italy to ease restrictions from May 4

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of positive coronavirus cases around the world have surpassed 2.97 million with the number of deaths exceeding the 2 lakh mark today, according to John Hopkins University tally.

The lockdown restrictions will be eased in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Iran and Spain as daily cases and death slow.

Meanwhile, Italy has announced that it will ease its 2-month old lockdown controls from May 4.

In addition to this, more than 54,000 people have died in the United States, representing more than a quarter of all deaths worldwide. The total number of positive cases in the US has also crossed 9,65,000.

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will return to work from today after recovering from coronavirus.

China’s National Health Commission today said that the mainland had confirmed just 3 new cases of coronavirus and no new deaths.
