NIPER-Guwahati designs 3D products to fight COVID-19

New Delhi (NVI): Two 3D products have been designed by researchers at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Guwahati (NIPER-G).These products are designed to provide help in the fight against the widespread coronavirus contagion.

The first product is a 3D-printed hands-free object that could be used to help open or close doors, windows, drawers (both vertical and horizontal), and refrigerator handle, or press elevator buttons, and laptop/desktop keyboards, including turning the switch buttons on/off.

These objects are one of the most germ-infested objects in houses, hospitals, factories, companies, institutes, organizations, and other buildings.

The researchers came up with the design for the fabrication of the 3D-printed object after a detailed analyses of several resources for risk measurement and on how viruses spread through bare hands.

In this current situation, this aspect may play a key role in transmitting infection from one person to another through bare hand contacts or contaminated surface source.

U.S.N Murty, Director, NIPER-G , noted that the product was easy to design, and was amenable to rapid development of prototypes. It was also handy, user friendly, non-fragile and easy to clean with the existing sanitizers or any alcoholic disinfectant.

The second product is a 3D-printed antimicrobial face-shield. It was designed after a thorough study to understand how viruses spread through oral, ophthalmic, olfactory and other body cavities.

The face shield is also easy to design and it is possible to have rapid development of prototypes. It is also low cost, easy to wear, has good chemical stability, non-fragile and is easy to clean with the existing sanitizers or any alcoholic disinfectant.

Murty noted that being a premier institute of national importance, NIPER-G endeavoured to help the country in fighting coronavirus through quick validated prototype/product development and deployment.

“NIPER-G is committed to provide useful contributions cum solutions,” he said.

Portugal offers affordable European residency to international investors

New Delhi (NVI): International investors can now get European residency in an easier and cost-effective manner by opting for Portuguese Golden Visa programme.

Through this programme, an international investor can get the residency in 12 months and at the same time, access to professional development, education for children, and the potential for a European passport in 5 years.

This means, that non-EU nationals can now live, work or study in any of the EU countries at an affordable rate through the Golden Visa route offered by Portugal, a core member of the European Union.

LCR Capital Partners, a global private investment and advisory services firm, is now helping its clients obtain the Portuguese ARI (“Autorização de Residência para Actividade de Investimento”) which is commonly referred to as the Portuguese Golden Visa.

This is a new service for international investors and their families interested in European residency.

The Portuguese Golden Visa is an investment-based visa designed to attract foreign capital. Unlike the US EB-5 Program, the Portuguese Golden Visa program is based on personal property ownership and is a lower cost and quicker alternative for families that don’t require access to US markets and schools.

Global death toll passes 1,00,000; COVID-19 cases top 1.6 million

New Delhi (NVI): The global coronavirus death toll has now surpassed 1,02,000, according to John Hopkins University data.

The total number of infected cases in the world has crossed over 1.6 million and more than 3,72,000 people have recovered from the contagion.

In addition to this, Italy has registered the highest number of COVID-19 deaths, more than 18,800, while US has reported the majority of confirmed infections.

The United States reported 2,108 coronavirus deaths in the last 24 hours, the highest daily increase in the country since the outbreak began, pushing the total US death toll to 18,777, with the total number of positive cases crossing 5,01,000.

As the total number of positive cases are nearing 2 million, the WHO has urged caution to countries considering easing restrictions put in place to stem the outbreak.

“The way down could be as dangerous as the way up if not managed properly,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

CO2 emissions may drop sharply due to corona: Scientists

New Delhi (NVI): The coronavirus pandemic, which has brought the entire world to a standstill, could result in the largest fall this year in the global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions since World War-II, according to a network of scientists examining emissions data.

Rob Jackson, chair of the Global Carbon Project, which produces widely-watched annual emissions estimates, said carbon dioxide output could fall by more than 5 per cent year-on-year, the first dip since a 1.4% reduction after the 2008 financial crisis, according to World Economic Forum (WEF) .

“I wouldn’t be shocked to see a 5% or more drop in carbon dioxide emissions this year, something not seen since the end of World War Two,” said Professor Jackson of Stanford University of California.

“Neither the fall of the Soviet Union nor the various oil or savings and loan crises of the past 50 years are likely to have affected emissions the way this crisis is,” he added.

While the prediction among a range of new forecasts being produced by climate researchers – represents a tiny sliver of good news in the time of crisis.

The scientists had warned world governments that global emissions must start dropping by 2020 to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, according to the WEF.

Experts have also warned that without structural change, the emissions decline caused by COVID-19 could be short-lived and have little impact on the concentrations of carbon dioxide that have accumulated in the atmosphere over decades.

“This drop is not due to structural changes, so as soon as confinement ends, I expect the emissions will go back close to where they were,” said Corinne Le Quéré a scientist at the University of East Anglia.

In a report by WEF, after world greenhouse gas emissions dipped in the aftermath of the 2007-2008 global financial crisis, they shot back up a whopping 5.1% in the recovery.

Meanwhile, the pattern of a swift rebound has already begun to play out in China, where emissions fell by an estimated 25 percent as the country closed factories and put in place strict measures on people’s movement to contain the spread of coronavirus earlier this year, but have since returned to a normal range.

A U.N. report published in November last year, found that emissions would have to start falling by an average of 7.6% per year to give the world a viable chance of limiting the rise in average global temperatures to 1.5C.

As well as the economy drop would be more than twice as large as the contraction during the financial crisis, and the largest annual fall in GDP since 1931, barring wartime.

Currently, with governments launching gigantic stimulus packages to stop their economies collapsing, investors are now watching to see how far the United States, and China, the European Union, Japan and others embrace lower-emission energy sources.

However, if there is a decline in emissions in 2020, around 10 to 20 pre cent then it’s not negligible, it’s important, but from a climate changes it would be a small dent if emissions go back to pre-COVID-19 crisis.
