NVI Correspondent

Srinagar, Dec 31( NVI): Road safety continues to be a growing concern in Srinagar, with 4 lakh traffic challans issued this year alone and a tragic toll of 57 lives lost in road traffic accidents.

The alarming statistics highlight the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures and strict enforcement of traffic rules in the city.

The figures, released by local authorities, underline the city’s increasing traffic congestion and unsafe driving practices. A significant portion of the challans were issued for violations such as speeding, driving without helmets, and ignoring traffic signals, which have been identified as key contributors to the growing number of accidents.

SSP Traffic Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmed, expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents and fatalities, stating, “Despite the issuance of 4 lakh challans this year, the number of accidents and fatalities remains alarmingly high. This is a clear indication that road safety awareness and enforcement need to be further strengthened. We must work together to change the mindset of drivers and ensure that traffic rules are followed meticulously.”

Authorities have stressed that despite the large number of challans, the rising fatalities demonstrate the need for further action in terms of infrastructure improvement, driver awareness campaigns, and the implementation of more stringent safety protocols.

The 57 deaths, a heart-wrenching reminder of the dangers on Srinagar’s roads, have sparked public outcry for safer driving habits and better road conditions. Many citizens have called for more efficient law enforcement, particularly around the busiest areas of the city, where accidents are more frequent.

Local officials have pledged to intensify efforts to curb road accidents by increasing patrols, improving signage, and conducting public awareness programs. NVI Correspondent

Srinagar, Dec 31(NVI): Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, today said that next December 5 would be a public holiday to commemorate the anniversary of of Sheikh Muhammed Abdullah, the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.

This announcement is part of ongoing efforts to honor the profound contributions of Sheikh Abdullah to the political and social landscape of the J&K.

Wani assured the public that there would be no reason for disappointment, stating that the holiday would serve as a tribute to the enduring legacy of the iconic leader, who was instrumental in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s political history.

Speaking on behalf of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Wani also praised the swift restoration efforts following recent disruptions caused by heavy snowfall. For the first time in history, essential services, including electricity and roads, were restored with remarkable speed—a feat largely attributed to the proactive involvement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

“The Chief Minister personally stationed himself in the affected areas, continuously monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates to ensure a rapid recovery,” Wani noted. “This swift restoration has been highly praised by the public, reflecting our commitment to their welfare and our ability to address challenges promptly.”

The restoration of essential services, which in the past had often been delayed during similar disruptions, has become a point of pride for local residents. Wani further emphasized that the government’s quick response ensured that recovery efforts were more efficient than ever before.

“The restoration of electricity and roads was completed in record time—something we have never witnessed before. For the first time, we’ve seen such swift recovery, and the people are deeply appreciative of these efforts,” Wani added.

However, despite Wani’s confident assertion that December 5 would be a public holiday to commemorate Sheikh Abdullah’s anniversary, the official holiday list released by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir for the year 2024 did not include December 5 as a designated holiday. This omission has raised questions among the public, who had been eagerly anticipating the holiday based on the advisor’s statement.

The announcement of December 5 as a holiday to honor Sheikh Abdullah’s anniversary was seen as a significant step toward preserving his legacy, but the absence of the holiday from the official list has left some residents confused.

“Inshallah, next December 5 will be a holiday,” Wani had earlier confirmed, expressing confidence in the government’s commitment to celebrating Sheikh Abdullah’s lasting influence. However, as the LG’s holiday list remains unchanged, the public awaits clarification on whether the holiday will be officially recognized. (News Vibes of India)
