Fact check: RBI emails asking for personal details to redeem monetary prize are fake

RBI emails

New Delhi (NVI): Few emails, allegedly sent by the Governor of RBI, claim that the recipient has won monetary compensation and is being asked to share personal details to redeem the prize.

The Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has investigated into the matter and states that these emails are fake.

It further stated that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) neither sends such messages nor uses Gmail accounts for communication.

Debunking the fake news, PIB took to Twitter and wrote, “Emails allegedly from the Governor of RBI claim that the recipient has won monetary compensation and are asking for personal details to redeem the prize.

#PIBFactCheck: These emails are #Fake. @RBI neither sends such messages nor uses Gmail accounts for communication.”

The Press Information Bureau launched this fact-checking unit in December 2019, to identify misinformation related to the government’s policies and schemes that are circulating on various social media platforms.

USAID, DFC announce $41 mn loan to finance renewable energy solutions in India

New Delhi (NVI): United States Agency for international development (USAID) and US international development finance corporation (DFC) will sponsor a USD 41 million loan agreement to help finance investments in renewable energy solutions by Indian SMEs.

“USAID and DFC are jointly sponsoring a $41 million loan portfolio guarantee to help finance investments by Indian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in renewable energy solutions, including rooftop solar installations,” according to an official statement.

SMEs account for 48 percent of the total energy consumed in India’s industrial sector. These loans will enable Small and Medium Enterprises to access reliable power and cut costs.

Furthermore, lower monthly energy costs will drive important social benefits, including job creation and economic growth, while reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.

During the signing of the agreement, USAID India’s Acting Mission Director Karen Klimowski stated, “USAID/India is pleased to promote power diversification and support local businesses in India. Investments in solar solutions, secured by these credit guarantees, will improve access to clean, steady, and affordable energy as well as further progress towards India’s clean energy transition and climate change mitigation.”

India’s commercial and industrial sectors pay high fees for their electricity, making rooftop solar a sustainable, cost-saving investment, but SMEs and residential consumers face obstacles in securing the financing needed to install and use rooftop panels, the statement added.

To address this challenge, USAID and DFC partnered with the New York-based Encourage Capital, an environmentally focused investment firm, and two Indian non-banking financial companies – cKers Financial and woman-owned Electronica Finance Limited (EFL).

“Encourage Capital has invested $15 million in EFL, which will use the USAID-DFC loan portfolio guarantee to stimulate the rooftop solar market—representing a $9 billion market opportunity—for SMEs,” the statement read.

Once these credit guarantees lower the financial hurdle for installing rooftop solar, India will realize numerous benefits resulting from the transition to this green technology. These guarantees have the potential to unlock lifesaving social benefits and robust economic growth.

USAID will continue its support by providing technical assistance to address quality and safety concerns in the rooftop solar market, it added.

One in five children globally do not have enough water to meet daily needs: UNICEF

water
Representational image

New Delhi (NVI): Almost one in five children around the world living in areas with high water vulnerability does not have enough water to meet their everyday needs, according to a UNICEF report.

The UN Children’s Fund report showed that, “Globally, more than 1.42 billion people, including 450 million children, live in areas of high, or extremely high, water vulnerability.”

This report is part of the Water Security for All initiative, which identifies areas where physical water scarcity risks overlap with poor water service levels. UNICEF said that communities living in these areas depend on surface water, unimproved sources or water which can take more than 30 minutes to collect.

“The world’s water crisis is not simply coming, it is here, and climate change will only make it worse,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore.

“Children are the biggest victims. When wells dry-up, children are the ones missing school to fetch water. When floods hit, children fall ill from waterborne illnesses. And when water resources decline, children cannot wash their hands to fight off diseases,” she said.

The report also shows that children in more than 80 countries live in areas with high or extremely high water vulnerability.

“Eastern and Southern Africa has the highest proportion of children living in such areas, with more than half of children (58 per cent) facing difficulty accessing sufficient water every day,” it stated.

It is followed by West and Central Africa (31 per cent), South Asia (25 per cent), and the Middle East (23 per cent). South Asia is home to the largest number of children living in areas of high water vulnerability – more than 155 million children, as per the report.

Whereas, children in 37 ‘hotspot’ countries face especially dire circumstances in terms of absolute numbers, the proportions of children affected, and where global resources, support and urgent action must be mobilized.

This includes Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Sudan, Tanzania and Yemen.

UNICEF report informed that demand for water continues to increase dramatically while resources are dwindling. In addition to rapid population growth, urbanization, water misuse and extreme weather events reduce available quantities of safe water, exacerbating water stress.

According to a UNICEF report from 2017, almost one in four children globally will live in areas of extremely high water stress by 2040.

The UN agency also stated that while the impact of water scarcity can be felt by all, no one suffers more than the most vulnerable children, adding that, “Children and families living in vulnerable communities face the double-edged sword of coping with high water scarcity levels while having the lowest water services.”

In response, UNICEF is launching the Water Security for All initiative to ensure every child has access to sustainable and climate-resilient water services.

It aims to mobilize resources, partnerships, innovation and global response to identified hotspots where the need for safe, resilient and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services is the greatest and most urgent.

“We can only achieve water security for every child through innovation, investment and collaboration, and by ensuring services are sustainable and resilient to climate shocks. For our children and our planet, we have to act,” Fore added.

Monaco Economic Board organises virtual trade mission, inks pacts with IFCCI & FICCI

Monaco

New Delhi (NVI): Due to Covid-19 restrictions this year, Monaco Economic Board (MEB) organised a virtual trade mission to Delhi and signed two cooperation agreements with counterparts in the Indo-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IFCCI) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

“As the government’s operational arm when it comes to business policy, Monaco Economic Board (MEB) had seized that opportunity to organise a Trade Mission to Delhi. A 30-strong delegation of key players in the Monegasque economy played their role in this rapprochement between the two countries,” read an official release on the virtual event.

Given current restrictions the MEB decided to keep up the momentum already gained to arrange a virtual trade mission this year, it said.

The E-Mission was organised under the aegis of the Monaco Embassy in India, in partnership with the Indian Embassy in France and Monaco, the Indo-French Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and the Promotion Bureau of the Principality of Monaco in New Delhi, as per the statement.

The event had two phases as usual. The first session included the welcome speech and bilateral presentations on the economies of both countries, followed by a sector-specific focus on finance, innovation, renewable energy, trade and raw materials, presented by Indian experts to Monaco companies.

It was an opportunity for the MEB to interact directly with Indian professionals working at: Crédit Agricole Corporate & Investment Bank, Link Innovation, Total India and TATA Steel Mining.

Targeted individual B2B meetings then took place online between Monegasque and Indian companies, having been pre-arranged thanks to the in-depth knowledge of organisers in both countries of their business environment, according to an official release.

The Principality highlighted its potential and appeal as a place in which to do business, as evidenced by average GDP growth of 5% in the last six years, with the exception of 2020. Its impressive economic performance rests on the many talented people it attracts with 140 nationalities residing on the 2km-square territory, and the broad range of sectors underpinning healthy revenues. Apart from finance and tourism, which automatically spring to mind, construction, real estate, trade and ICT are strong economic drivers, it said.

Independent of the European Union, yet part of the Euro Zone, Monaco has no debts and enjoys an envious level of institutional and economic stability. The Principality is easy to get to thanks mainly to its proximity to France’s second largest airport in Nice just 30 km away. Surrounded by mountains on the Mediterranean coast, Monaco is also a peaceful country where people and property are safe and secure, read the statement.

Against the current health crisis, the Principality has been able to adapt quickly to implement necessary measures and is proving more resilient than its neighbours. Above all, Monaco is looking to the future having put in place an ambitious recovery plan with emphasis at the Sovereign’s instigation on two transitions: digital and clean energy, it said.
