Freezing temperatures grip Kashmir, Ladakh, Mixed winter chill in Jammu region

Srinagar, Dec 09(NVI) : The Valley is under the tight grip of severe cold with temperatures showing a sharp decline bringing in the frosty start of the day.

With ski resort of Gulmarg recording the lowest at a bone-chilling -9.0°C. Shopian (-7.5°C) and Sonamarg (-7.0°C) followed closely, highlighting the intensity of the cold wave. Popular tourist destinations like Pahalgam (-6.8°C) and Pulwama (-6.7°C) are also experiencing severe frost. Even relatively warmer areas like Srinagar and Ganderbal couldn’t escape the freezewith both registering -3.3°C.

Other regions, such as Kupwara (-4.4°C), Kulgam (-5.1°C), and Bandipora (-4.1°C), also endured subzero conditions. Notably, Larnoo stood out with a biting -7.9°C, underscoring the widespread cold across the valley.

Jammu’s weather showed significant variation, with the plains offering some respite while higher altitudes experienced freezing conditions. Padder was the coldest in the region at -7.5°C, matching Shopian in Kashmir. Other high-altitude areas like Banihal (-3.1°C) and Bhaderwah (-1.2°C) also faced icy temperatures.

In contrast, the plains were comparatively milder, with Jammu (6.5°C) and Kathua (7.0°C) recording temperatures above freezing. However, locations like Samba (2.3°C) and Udhampur (1.6°C) still felt the winter chill, with Ramban being the warmest spot at 9.2°C.

Ladakh bore the brunt of the cold, with Leh registering a numbing -12.8°C, making it the coldest location across all regions. This extreme low highlights the harsh winter conditions, where freezing temperatures dominate life during this season( News Vibes of India)

Suspicious bag found on national highway near Pattan, Baramulla : Security forces cardon off area

Srinagar, Dec 09( NVI) : A security operation is underway after a suspicious bag was detected along the Palhalan stretch of the national highway in Pattan, Baramulla district of North Kashmir today.

The incident has brought traffic to a complete halt on the busy highway, a critical route as security forces act swiftly to assess and neutralize any potential threat.

The Army, police and the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) have responded promptly, cordoning off the area to ensure public safety. Officers on the ground are thoroughly examining the bag, employing specialized equipment to determine if it contains explosives or other dangerous materials.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid the area until the situation is under control. Such incidents are treated with the utmost seriousness in Kashmir.

Winter Travel Advisory for Gulmarg-Tangmarg Route

Srinagar, Dec 08(NVI): The Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Gulmarg has issued a winter travel advisory to ensure smooth and safe movement on the Gulmarg-Tangmarg road during the upcoming snowy months.

The advisory highlights that slippery conditions and heavy snowfall often lead to traffic issues and accidents. To address these concerns, specific measures will be enforced:

-Restricted Vehicle Movement: Only 4×4 vehicles and those fitted with anti-skid chains will be allowed to travel between Tangmarg and Gulmarg until the ice clears.

Limit on Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs): Only light motor vehicles with a maximum seating capacity of 10 are allowed to ensure fewer breakdowns and traffic snarls.

Anti-skid Chain Policy: Vendors authorized by the authorities are allowed to install anti-skid chains on vehicles, with the cost fixed at Rs 600 per pair. These vendors must operate in designated parking zones to minimize congestion.

Furthermore, tour operators and private car owners must park only in specified areas in Tangmarg to prevent roadside traffic issues. Similarly, coat and boot sellers have been directed not to obstruct roads with their activities to ease movement.

Army Chief General Dwivedi reviews Northern Command’s operational readiness

Suspected Food poisoning case in Rajouri : Three dead, Two critical

Srinagar, Dec 08(NVI): In a tragic case of suspected food poisoning in the Kandi area of Rajouri district, father and two siblings died while mother and her daughter are battling for life.

The critically ill mother-daughter have been rushed to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu for emergency treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Senior police officials confirmed that a case has been registered and preliminary inquiry has been launched.

A police spokesman said: “We have initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the source of the food contamination. The samples are being collected and statements from witnesses and family members are being recorded. Strict action will be taken if any negligence is found.”

A senior doctor confirmed to NVI that father and two siblings (bother and sister haved died) while mother and her daughter are battling for life. “It seems a case of food poisoning and samples have been sent for testing,” he said.

District health officials have also intervened. A senior health officer said: “A medical team has been dispatched to the area to conduct health checks on others who might have consumed the same food. Public awareness campaigns are being planned to ensure proper food safety practices are followed.”

Locals have expressed shock and grief over the incident with community leaders urging authorities to expedite the investigation. A resident of Kandi said: “This is an unprecedented tragedy for our village. We hope the authorities will identify the cause and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.”

Weather Advisory: Light snowfall, rain predicted over the next 10 days in J&K

Srinagar, Dec 08(NVI): Jammu and Kashmir is set to experience a mix of light snowfall, rain and dry spells over the next ten days, according to the latest forecast issued by the local weatherman.

On December 8, cloudy weather will dominate the J&K, with light snowfall expected in the higher reaches of Kashmir. In the evening, a minor rain spell is possible in some parts of the Jammu region.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif predicts a 35 percent chance of light snowfall in south Kashmir during the morning hours of December 9. The afternoon will bring partly cloudy to sunny skies. Light rain and snow are also expected in Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua and Ramban districts with a 25 per cent chance of minor rain in other parts of Jammu.

December 10 and 11 will bring mostly dry weather across J&K though Ganderbal and Bandipora may see a minor snow spell in their higher reaches on December 11.

On Dec 12, a weak Western Disturbance is expected to bring light rain and snow to some areas of Kashmir, while the rest of the region will remain mostly dry. December 13 will see continued dry conditions, with the same expected through December 14-17.

Residents and travelers are advised to stay updated on weather conditions, especially in higher altitudes where snowfall may lead to disruptions. (News Vibes of India)

AK-47 rifle used in fratricide cum suicide incident at Udhampur : SSP Amod Nagpure

Jammu, Dec 08(NVI): Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Udhampur district of Jammu Amod Nagpure today said that two policemen were killed by the fratricide-cum suicide incident and AK-47 riffle was used in the act.

He said that the third officer fortunately survived the attack. “Police personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene and initial investigations have confirmed the use of the AK-47 in the incident,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased officers have been shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur for postmortem and other official procedures.

The SSP also said that the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has arrived at the spot and they have taken samples’ and evidence.

The incident happened early this morning when a police vehicle from Sopore, Baramulla district of North Kashmir was on way to Reasi district. When it reached, Rehemberi, Udhampur district, sudden gunfire was heard after the police team from Police station Rehemberi, Udhampur reached the spot and informed the seniors.

The exact motive behind the incident is still under investigation. Police officials are working on various leads to determine the actual cause–(News Vibes of India)

Two policemen killed in suspected fratricide incident at J&K’s Udhampur district

Jammu, Dec 8 (NVI): In a tragic incident, two policemen from Sopore, Baramulla district, were killed today morning while traveling in a departmental vehicle in Udhampur district of Jammu. Initial investigations suggest it was a case of fratricide while police have taken up the probe to find out actual cause.

According to police officials, the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. when Police Station Rehambal (Udhampur district) received a report of gunfire inside a vehicle carrying policemen to the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) Talwara in Reasi district

“Preliminary investigations suggest it is a case of fratricide, with one officer allegedly shooting his colleague before taking his own life,” police stated, adding that further probe was on.

Senior officers have arrived at the scene, and the crime site has been secured. Forensic teams, including experts from the State Investigation Agency (SIA), are conducting a detailed probe to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Top Gilgit leader held in false case, his party threatens mass protests

Pakistan-occupied Gilgit, Dec 7 (NVI) Pakistani authorities have arrested a top leader of Gilgit Muhammad Javed in some farcical case, according to his party which has threatened to organise mass protests if he is not released.

Javed, former Chairman of Karakoram National Movement (KNM), is currently Central leader of Awami Action Committee which is spearheading protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) against a new law imposed by Pakistan.

Javed has been named in a “baseless FIR” and a pre-arrest bail application was obtained from the District and Sessions Court and the Supreme Court, said Advocate Mumtaz Hussain Nagri, who is Central Chairman of KNM.

He said the pre-arrest bail was valid till December 10 but in violation of that, the police arrested him today.

Nagri said if the “rogue law-breaking forces” act like this, then the courts may be shut down.

“If Muhammad Javed is not released, then we will also be forced to call the people to protest against the lawlessness,” Advocate Nagri said.

Police Seize Rs 4.3 Crore Assets in major crackdown on drug trafficking in J&K

Srinagar, Dec 07 ( NVI): In a significant move to curb drug trafficking, Police have attached properties worth Rs 4.3 crores under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Anantnag district of South Kashmir.
Police said that  the assets seized include five residential houses and three vehicles linked to narcotics activities.
Among the properties affected are several homes, including those of individuals involved in multiple NDPS cases, as well as vehicles tied to suspected drug offenders. Notably, a Santro, WagonR and Toyota Corolla were also seized. This operation, carried out by Bijbehara and Achabal Police, is a part of J&K Police’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks in the region.
These actions aim not only to disrupt the financial structures supporting illicit drug trade but also to create a deterrent effect, emphasizing that criminal activities related to narcotics will be met with severe legal consequences.
