Companies can fight climate change by decarbonising supply chains: WEF report

decarbonising supply chains

New Delhi (NVI): A new World Economic Forum (WEF) report says that many companies can multiply their climate impact by decarbonising global supply chains and that this could be a game-changing opportunity to fight climate change.

The report, co-authored with Boston Consulting Group, is the second in WEF’s series for the Net-Zero Challenge.

According to the report, addressing supply-chain emissions enables many customer-facing companies to impact a volume of emissions several times higher than they could if they were to focus on decarbonizing their own direct operations and power consumption alone – and achieving a net-zero supply chain is possible with very limited additional costs.

As per the key findings of the report, for companies in most customer-facing sectors, end-to-end emissions are much higher than the direct emissions in their own operations (so-called Scope 1 and 2 emissions). By engaging suppliers to create a net-zero supply chain, companies can boost their climate impact, enable emission reduction in hard-to-abate sectors, and accelerate climate action in countries where it would otherwise not be high on the agenda.

Apart from that, the report states that eight supply chains account for more than 50% of global emissions. Food, construction, fashion, fast-moving consumer goods, electronics, automotive, professional services and freight account for more than half of all global greenhouse gas emissions. A significant share is indirectly controlled by only a few companies.

Another finding suggests that net-zero supply chains would hardly increase end-consumer costs. Around 40% of all emissions in these supply chains could be abated with readily available and affordable levers (<€10 per tonne of CO2 equivalent), such as circularity, efficiency and renewable power – with only marginal impact on product costs. Even with zero supply-chain emissions, end-consumer costs would go up by 1–4% at the most in the medium term.

However, the report also states that decarbonizing supply chains is hard. Even leading companies struggle to get the data they need and to set clear targets and standards to which their suppliers must adhere, it says.

Engaging an often-fragmented supplier landscape is challenging – especially when emissions are “buried” deep in the supply chain, or when addressing them might require collective action at the industry level, says the report.

New Delhi (NVI): Just two days after India’s electricity demand hit a new record of 185.82 gigawatts, the peak power demand touched yet another new high of 187.3 GW today, underscoring the growing strength of the Indian economy after a long pandemic phase.

Union Power Minister RK Singh tweeted on the fresh record created in the power demand. “A fresh record has been created in Power Demand breaching the previous record of 1,85,820 MW which was created on 20/01/2021. Today the power demand touched 1,87,300 MW at 10:28 am. This again underscores the growing strength of our economy,” he said in a tweet.

“The rapid growth in demand also underscores the benefits of empowering the poor which our Government did under Saubhagya,” the Power Minister said in another tweet.

On January 20, the peak power demand in the country hit a new record of 185.82 gigawatts, crossing the previous high of 182.88GW recorded December 30 last year.

With a surge in commercial and industrial activities after the lifting of lockdown curbs in recent months, India’s electricity demand hit two successive new records.

Notably, the rise in power demand hints at a recovery phase and overall boost to economic activity in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, the rise in demand is good news for power producers, as coal-based power plants were running at only 53% utilisation level in December owing to lower consumption.

New Delhi (NVI): As India marches ahead in the vaccination drive, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the Covid beneficiaries and those involved in the vaccination drive in Varanasi today and asserted that the two vaccines are completely safe, amid the hesitancy seen in the country to take the jabs.

While speaking at the event via video conferencing, he said, “Earlier, there was pressure on me about when the vaccine will come. I said that it is not political people to decide on it and the decision rests with scientists. The vaccines have now come out after thorough research by our scientists.”

PM Modi expressed pride over the development of two vaccines in the country to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. He also talked to health workers who took the jab and asked for their feedback.

During the interaction, he congratulated various hospitals and their staff for successful administration of vaccination drive.

“The biggest vaccination programme in the world is going on in our country. Today, the nation has the will power to manufacture its own vaccine – not one but two Made in India vaccines. Vaccines are reaching every corner of the country. India is absolutely self-reliant in this regard,” Modi said.

The PM also noted that the country was providing COVID-19 vaccine to several countries as well. “India is also helping several countries,” he said.

“The medical infrastructure in Varanasi and nearby areas has been improved over the past six years since he was elected from here,” the PM added.

He stated that as per the plan, 20,000 healthcare professionals will be given the vaccine at 15 vaccination centres in Varanasi in the first phase.

Prior to and post the launch of the vaccination programme on January 16, the PM has been holding dialogue and discussion with scientists, politicians, officials and other stakeholders. He has been taking an active part in a bid to ensure the smooth conduct of the COVID-19 vaccination drive, which is the largest in the world.

As part of the vaccination drive, the Indian government is aiming to inoculate at least 3 crore people, including healthcare and frontline workers.

In Varanasi, vaccines are being administered at six centres. The first vaccine jab was administered at the Sir Sunderlal Hospital of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to a sanitary worker named Rashid Khan.

It may be recalled that India’s drug regulator, DCGI, has given restricted emergency use approval to two vaccines – Covishied, developed by the Oxford University and pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, and Covaxin, which has been indigenously developed by Bharat Biotech.

Delhi chill
File photo

New Delhi (NVI): The minimum temperature is likely to increase slightly over Delhi-NCR between January 23 to 24, expected to bring some relief from cold conditions in the region, according to IMD.

The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) said this is due to the influence of a fresh western disturbance.

According to the IMD’s weather bulletin, “A fresh Western Disturbance affecting the western Himalayas is likely to provide some relief from the chill in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR). The minimum temperature is expected to increase to 9 degrees Celsius by January 24 as a result of easterly winds and cloud cover.”

“Easterly winds have already started blowing in the national capital. A cloud cover will further increase the minimum temperature on January 23 and 24,” IMD’s regional centre said.

The Met department also predicted that the cold will, however, make a return in the national capital after a few warm and windy days from January 25.

Meanwhile, the national capital’s minimum temperature dropped to 4.2 degrees Celsius today morning, three notches below normal.  “Dense fog also engulfed parts of Delhi-NCR, which lead to poor visibility in many areas,” the IMD said.

The Met department in regard to this said that, due to fog the lowest visibility at Palam area was recorded at 1,000 metre, while 500 metres at Safdarjung airport area at around 7 am.

Apart from this, from January 22 to January 24, rainfall is expected in many areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the IMD predicted.

It added that “Drizzling is also expected in Delhi, Chandigarh and adjoining areas on January 23.”
