Two terrorist associates held with arms and ammunition in J&K’s Awantipora

Pulwama (NVI): Two terrorist associates of Jaish-e-Mohammad were today arrested from Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. They were involved in providing shelter, support, logistics as well as transporting arms of terrorists in Awantipora and Tral and passing sensitive information to JeM terrorists, police said.

Awantipora police along with the help of soldiers from Army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF personnel from 130 Battalion held the two militant associates who were affiliated with banned militant outfit Jaish-e-Muhammad, they said.

The arrested militant associates have been identified as Shezaan Gulzar Beigh from Gadhikhal, Chersoo and Waseem-ul-Rehman Sheikh from Midoora in Awantipora.

A police official said that incriminating material including explosive material and ammunition has been recovered from both of them.

Domestic passenger traffic reaches a new high of 2.73 lakh: Puri

New Delhi (NVI): Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today said that a record of 2,73,845 passengers on flights flew across India on Sunday, setting a new high since domestic flights resumed in May last year.

He added that this is taking us even closer to the pre-COVID numbers.

“2,73,845 passengers on 2,179 flights yesterday is a new high since domestic flights resumed on 25 May 2020. This takes us even closer to the Pre-COVID numbers. Flying has emerged as the chosen mode of transport which offers efficiency, safety & predictability,” the minister tweeted.

Puri also shared statistics which shows that there were 4,360 flight movements across the country and 5,46,763 footfalls at the airport on the day.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) data, the previous new high of 2,52,374 was recorded on December 1.

All scheduled commercial passenger flights were suspended in India on March 25, 2020 after the government imposed a lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus, while domestic flights resumed services from May 25 in a gradual manner.

The domestic flights were, initially, allowed to operate only 33 per cent of pre-COVID flights, which was increased to 45 per cent and then to 60 per cent during the first week of September.

The ministry in December last year, increased the domestic flights operations from existing 70 per to 80 per cent of pre-COVID approved capacity.

Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) earlier also extended the suspension of all international flight operations in the country till January 31.

SC asks Centre to put farm laws on hold

New Delhi (NVIT: The Supreme Court today asked the Government to put all farm laws on hold in wake of massive protests by farmers and proposed that a committee be formed to look into the contentious issue.

“We propose to form a committee and if the government does not then we will stay the implementation of the farm acts,” Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde said during the hearing.

Hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the new farm laws as well as the ones related to the ongoing agitation at Delhi borders, the apex court said that it was not happy with the Centre’s handling of the issue.

The court has said that it will pass an order on the matter today or tomorrow. The SC also observed that holding the laws will make an appropriate and peaceful atmosphere for talks.

India’s daily Covid toll dips below 170 after 229 days

New Delhi (NVI): India has reported significant decline in daily coronavirus deaths, with less than 170 fatalities in the past 24 hours, after 229 days, according to Union Health Ministry.

As many as 161 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the COVID-19 death toll to 1,51,160.

In a official statement, Health Ministry said, “India has also been registering declining daily COVID-19 cases since many days continuously, a total of 16,311 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours.”

It added that the decline in new cases and high rate of recovery had in tandem resulted in continuous fall in the country’s active caseload on a sustained basis.

The country’s total active caseload has fallen to 2.25 lakh and stands that 2,22,526. The present active caseload consists of just 2.13 per cent of India’s total positive cases.

In the last 24 hours, 16,959 cases have recovered and discharged and total recovered cases stand at 10,092,909. This has led to a net decline of 809 from the total active caseload, the statement said.

Moreover, the gap between recovered cases and active cases, which is steadily increasing, is nearing 99 lakhs and presently stands at 98,70,383. With this, the recovery rate is improved to 96.43 per cent today.

About 78.56 per cent of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 States and Union Territories. Kerala has reported the maximum number of single day recoveries with 4,659 cases, while 2,302 people recovered in Maharashtra followed by 962 in Chhattisgarh, the statement noted.

As many as 80.25 per cent of the new cases are concentrated in 9 States and UTs. Kerala has reported the highest daily new cases at 4,545, followed by Maharashtra with 3,558 new cases.

Furthermore, 161 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours and six States and UTs account for 69.57 per cent of the daily deaths, the ministry said.

Out of these, Maharashtra saw the maximum fatalities (34). Kerala and West Bengal follow with 23 and 19 daily deaths, respectively, it added.

UK opens mass vaccination centers to boost COVID vaccine roll out

New Delhi (NVI): The UK government has opened seven mass vaccination centers today as part of efforts to roll out COVID-19 vaccine to all vulnerable people in Britain.

The government is aiming to vaccinate almost 14 million vulnerable people in England including the over-80s, care home residents and health and care staff by the middle of February, according to the reports

UK National Health Service (NHS) in a statement said that, the seven large scale vaccination sites are capable of delivering 1,000 of the life-saving jabs each week.

“Hundreds more GP-led and hospital services are also due to open this week along with the first pharmacy-led pilot sites, taking the total to around 1,200,” it added.

According to NHS, letters are sent out to 6,00,000 people aged 80 and above, who live up to a 45-minute drive from one of the new centers set up across the country, inviting them to book an appointment for vaccine jabs.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock is due to visit one of the vaccination sites, will set out the vaccines delivery plan at a Downing Street press conference today.

Earlier, Hancock said that about 2 million people in the UK had been vaccinated, with some 200,000 jabs administered in the country daily.

The UK health officials had said that a speedy mass vaccination roll out will help get Britain out of its third nationwide lockdown, which was imposed in this month to curb a surge in infections, the reports said.

So far, Britain has recorded over 81,500 deaths and over 3.08 million coronavirus cases, the Johns Hopkins University data shows.

New Delhi (NVI): The total count of coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 10.4 million-mark and currently stands at 10,466,559 after 16,311 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,51,160 after 161 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-affected Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 19,69,114 followed by Karnataka with 9,27,559 and Andhra Pradesh with 8,84,916 positive cases.

Gujarat schools reopen for class 10,12

New Delhi (NVI): The schools in Gujarat have reopened for classes 10 and 12 today, after remaining closed for over 9 months amid COVID-19 outbreak.

The state government informed that, for now, class 10 and 12 students, who are due to appear for the upcoming board exams have been permitted to visit schools for regular classes.

As per the reopening, all the schools in the state have to strictly follow the Centre mandated standard operating procedure (SOP).

Under this, the school administration is required to make arrangements of hand sanitizers, thermal guns for checking temperatures, hand wash facilities, among others.

Besides, the students will have to bring written permission from their parents to attend classes and attendance is not mandatory. With in-person classes resuming, the online education system will continue as usual.

Apart from this, the regular classes also resumed for graduation and post-graduation final years students.

So far, Gujarat has confirmed 2,51,944 coronavirus cases with 4,344 deaths since the outbreak in the state.

Bird Flu confirmed in Delhi, all 8 samples found positive

New Delhi (NVI): Bird Flu cases have been confirmed in Delhi after all 8 samples of the dead crows and ducks were found positive for the avian influenza (AI) in lab tests.

Delhi’s Animal Husbandry Department said, “All the samples tested positive for avian flu.”

As many as 91 crows and 27 ducks were found dead across 15 Delhi Development Authority (DDA) parks in Delhi on Sunday, prompting the authorities to declare in an ‘alert zone’.

Maharashtra too had confirmed the presence of avian flu today with test results showing that 800 chickens died of the flu at Murumba village in Parbhani district.

With this, nine states in the country have confirmed bird flu cases so far. The eight other states are – Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Meanwhile, Haryana has reported the most number of bird deaths; more than 4 lakh birds have died in the last few weeks. Jammu and Kashmir and Chhattisgarh are also on alert.

The central government on Sunday said it has directed zoo managements to submit daily reports to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) till their area is declared free from the disease.

India records 16,311 COVID cases, 161 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India have crossed the 10.4 million-mark and currently stands at 10,466,559 with an increase of 16,311 cases in the last 24 hours, according to Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll has gone up to 1,51,160 with 161 fatalities registered during this period.

Notably, more than 10 million people have recovered from the virus and the total recoveries currently stands at 10,092,909 while active Covid-19 cases have dropped further to 2.22 lakh mark and stands at 2,22,526.

In terms of active coronavirus cases, India now stands at the 14th spot globally.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with total 19,69,114 confirmed Covid-19 cases which include 50,061 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 55,351 and 18,63,702 recoveries.

It is followed by Karnataka (9,27,559), Andhra Pradesh (8,84,916), Tamil Nadu (8,26,261) and Kerala (8,11,148).

Furthermore, total number of samples tested up to January 10 is 18,17,55,831 including 6,59,209 samples tested yesterday, according to ICMR.

Coronavirus cases surpass 90 million-mark worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 90.2 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 19,34,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 49.9 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 22.4 million, while the number of fatalities caused due to the deadly contagion have exceeded 3,74,000 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 8.1 million-mark and stands at 8,105,790 while the number of deaths have surged past 2,03,000.

Meanwhile, the new strain of the coronavirus, first detected in Britain, has been confirmed in Mexico for the first time.

South Korea reported fewer than 500 new coronavirus infections on Monday for the first time since record high daily case numbers over the Christmas holiday period.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported 451 new cases. Overall the coutnry has reported a total of 69,114 cases, with 1,140 deaths.

Furthermore, one in five people in England may have had coronavirus, new modelling suggests, equivalent to 12.4 million people, rising to almost one in two in some areas.
