Kashmir braces for intensified Cold Wave as temperatures plummet

NVI Correspondent

Srinagar, Jan 24(NVI): A harsh cold wave is set to grip the Kashmir Valley over the next 48 hours, intensifying the already freezing conditions across the Valley.

According to weather forecasts, night temperatures in central and north Kashmir plains are expected to drop to between -4°C and -6°C. South Kashmir plains are likely to experience even harsher conditions, with temperatures plunging to as low as -9°C in some areas.

The valley has already been reeling under extreme cold, with Zojila recording a bone-chilling -28.0°C, Gulmarg at -8.5°C, and Sonamarg at -9.8°C. In the Jammu region, Padder reported sub-zero temperatures of -4.4°C, while Drass in Ladakh stood at an icy -22.4°C.

Meteorologists have predicted dry weather for the rest of January, with only a weak Western Disturbance expected around January 31. This prolonged dry spell is likely to further reduce water levels in streams and reservoirs, posing additional challenges for residents.

Local authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures, ensuring proper insulation of homes and adequate heating arrangements. Despite the biting cold, life in the valley continues, with communities showing resilience and adapting to the harsh winter as part of their daily routine.

Tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam have seen an uptick in visitors, drawn by the snow-clad landscapes, but travelers are advised to remain cautious due to slippery roads and freezing conditions. While the chill bites, the valley’s beauty under the frosty sky remains unparalleled, embodying the spirit of survival amidst nature’s extremities.(News Vibes of India)

Tourism sector Demands dedicated advisor amid growth challenges

NVI Correspondent

Srinagar, Jan 23 (NVI): Despite a surge in tourist arrivals, Kashmir’s tourism sector is grappling with challenges that have hindered its full potential, prompting calls for government intervention. Representatives of the tourism industry, including tour operators, hoteliers, and houseboat owners, have urged the government to appoint a dedicated advisor to address the sector’s issues and promote sustainable growth.

Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, the group highlighted that while the tourism economy has seen significant growth, particularly in the last five years post-COVID, the lack of promotion and high accommodation costs have negatively impacted business.

“Tourism is performing better than other trades, but despite this, many stakeholders are struggling. Over 1 lakh people have entered the sector in the last five years, but we need focused efforts to address key concerns,” a representative said.

The operators pointed out that high accommodation costs have deterred potential visitors, leading to a decline in hotel and homestay bookings. They stressed the importance of targeted promotional campaigns to attract more tourists and urged the Chief Minister to appoint a single advisor dedicated to the tourism industry.

Reviving the declining houseboat industry, which has dwindled to just 750 houseboats, was another priority outlined by the stakeholders. They also emphasized the need for improved connectivity, particularly by ensuring direct train operations to Kashmir.

“Environmental concerns and other pressing issues also need attention. A dedicated advisor would ensure our voices are heard, and our challenges are addressed,” the group added.

The tourism operators expressed hope that the government would take proactive steps to protect and enhance the industry, which is a crucial pillar of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy.(News Vibes of India)
