BJP chief Nadda tests Covid positive

New Delhi (NVI): BJP president JP Nadda today said that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus and has self-isolated himself at home while following all instructions by the doctors.

The BJP chief took to Twitter to announce his positive status and requested those who were in touch with him for last few days to get themselves checked.

“I got myself tested after seeing initial symptoms of corona and my report has come positive. My health is fine and am following all instructions by doctors while self-isolating myself at home. I request all those who were in touch with me for last few days to isolate themselves and get checked,” he tweeted.

Srinagar (NVI): The people of Jammu and Kashmir once again reaffirmed their faith in the democratic system by actively participating in the sixth phase of District Development Council (DDC) polls as a voter turnout of 51.51 per cent was recorded, State Election Commissioner (SEC) KK Sharma said today.

SEC Sharma was addressing the media after the culmination of phase-VI of the DDC polls which witnessed a healthy percentage of 51.51 per cent.

While giving a briefing about the elections which were held today, the SEC said that polling was peaceful and people participated enthusiastically despite severe cold conditions in Kashmir division and some hilly areas of Jammu division.

Polling has been peaceful in the poll going 31 constituencies of DDC including 14 in Kashmir division and 17 in Jammu division that witnessed 51.51 per cent of polling, he added.

He said that polling was held in 2,071 polling stations including 1,208 from Kashmir division and 863 from Jammu division.

SEC further informed that Jammu division recorded an average voter turnout of 68.56% with Poonch District recording the highest percentage of 76.78% followed by Rajouri district with 74.03% and 74.02% voting recorded in Reasi district. The lowest turnout in Jammu division was in Kathua district which recorded 60.95%.

The Kashmir Division recorded 31.55% average voter turnout with Ganderbal district recording the highest polling at 58.45% followed by Kupwara District at 51.08% and Bandipora with around 47.66% polling, he added.

Giving district wise details, the SEC said that in Kashmir Division, the polling percentage recorded in Budgam was 30.99%, Baramulla 34.56%, Anantnag 24.06, Kulgam 37.74%, Pulwama 8.16% and 4.60% polling was registered in Shopian.

Similarly, in Jammu division poll percentage of 70.01% was recorded in Samba, 72.04% in Udhampur, 71.34% in Ramban, 62.93 in Doda and 66.32% in Jammu district.

He further said that 3,85,606 (2,07,223 male and 1,78,383 female votes) people exercised their right to franchise for the sixth phase across the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.

Counting of votes for Sarpanch and Panch constituencies which went to poll in the sixth phase is being conducted immediately after the close of polls and results shall be declared soon, he said.

New Delhi (NVI): Army Chief General MM Naravane, who is on a six-day tour of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, today received Guard of Honour at Land Forces Headquarters in UAE, becoming the first Indian Army chief to have received the honour in the gulf nation.

Pertinent to mention here that this is first-ever visit by a head of the Indian Army to the two strategically important Gulf countries.

Gen. Naravane also held talks with Saudi Commander General Fahd Bin Abdullah Mohammed Al-Mutir on bilateral defence cooperation.

“General MM Naravane #COAS received a Guard of Honour at HQ Royal Saudi #LandForces. #COAS discussed issues of bilateral defence cooperation with General Fahd Bin Abdullah Mohammed Al-Mutir, Commander Royal Saudi Land Forces,” the Indian Army said in a tweet.

The Army chief’s visit to the UAE aims to further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.

The Indian Army chief’s visit to UAE and Saudi Arabia comes amid heightened tensions with China over border stand-off in Eastern Ladakh.

His visit also comes amid normalisation of Israel’s relations with several Arab countries as well as situation arising out of the assassination of Iran’s top nuclear weapons scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

Pak violates ceasefire in Degwar sector of Poonch in J&K

New Delhi (NVI): In yet another ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops today shelled forward areas in Degwar sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir, defence officials said.

The Pakistani army targeted Degwar sector at around 5:45 pm, they said.

“At about 1745 hours Pak initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms & shelling with mortars along LoC in Degwar sector in district Poonch (J&K),” they said, adding that the Indian Army retaliated befittingly.

Yesterday, Pakistani troops had violated the ceasefire in Balakote sector of the same district at around 6 pm.

Earlier on December 10, two Pakistani soldiers were killed in cross border firing in Mankote Sector of Poonch district of Jammu region.

Poonch (NVI): Two militants were killed while their associate was arrested during an encounter with security forces in Chatta-Pani area along Mughal Road in Jammu’s Poonch district today.

Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Mukesh Kumar said the encounter took place in Dugran -Poshana Chatta-Pani area that falls under the jurisdiction of police station Sarankote in Poonch.

Official sources said that a combing operation is underway in the area while the firing has been stopped. “Before calling off operation, we want to ensure that no militants are present in the area. It was a tough operation due to snowy area,” said an official.

Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbah Singh said that these militants had recently infiltrated into this part of Kashmir and were on way to Shopian district of South Kashmir. “We had received the information about their presence on Friday but due to difficult terrain and snow, the contact with these militants was not established. Today a contact was established,” Singh said.

The 84-kilometre historic Mughal Road is between Bufliaz, a town in the Poonch district, and the Shopian district of South Kashmir.

A couple of days ago, joint forces had busted a militant hideout in the upper forest belt of Herpora area in Shopian along the Mughal Road. An official said that since the busting of the hideout, intensive search operations were launched in different parts of the road by security forces including soldiers from 16 Rashtriya Rifles and today. A contact with militants was established in Dugran-Poshana Chatta-Pani area that falls under the jurisdiction of police station Sarankote in Poonch.

A police official told NVI that trapped militants declined the offer to surrender. “An offer to surrender was given to the trapped militants, which they declined. Reinforcement has been called in to neutralise these militants,” he said adding the inputs suggest that two among the three militants were non-locals.

Sitharaman reviews implementation of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat package

New Delhi (NVI): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today reviewed the implementation of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat package with Secretaries of all Ministries/Departments concerned.

In a statement, the Finance Ministry said that Rs 21,000 crores of MSME dues have been paid in past seven months since May 2020 by the Central government agencies and Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).

“Over Rs 21,000 crores of MSME dues have been paid in past 7 months since May 2020 by the Central government agencies and CPSEs,” according to the Ministry’s statement.

“The highest level of procurement was achieved in October of over ₹5,100 crores and payment of over ₹4,100 crores. Going by the reports received in the first 10 days for November 2020, this level of performance is expected to be surpassed as procurement of about ₹4,700 crores and payment of about ₹4,000 crores have already been reported,” it added.

To recall, on May 12 this year, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced a special comprehensive economic package to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in India. He gave a clarion call for AatmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan or a Self-Reliant India Movement, the Finance Ministry said. He also outlined five pillars of AatmaNirbhar Bharat – Economy, Infrastructure, System, Vibrant Demography and Demand.

Following the announcement, the Finance Minister presented the details of the AatmaNirbhar Bharat Package 1.0 in a series of press conferences from 13th May 2020 to 17th May 2020. Subsequently, she announced AatmaNirbhar Bharat Package 2.0 on 12th October and AatmaNirbhar Bharat Package 3.0 on 12th November 2020.

The Ministries and Departments concerned immediately started implementing the announcements under the 3 Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Packages (ANBP). The progress of implementation is being reviewed and monitored regularly, almost on a daily basis, according to the Ministry.

New Delhi (NVI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today said that the 24X7 Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) facility will start from tomorrow.

With this, India will become one of the few countries in the world to operate the system 24X7. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das made the announcement today. The facility will become operational from 12:30 PM tonight.

“RTGS facility becomes operational 24X7 from 12.30 pm tonight. Congratulations to the teams from RBI, IFTAS and the service partners who made this possible,” the RBI governor tweeted.

RTGS is a financial transaction system, where there is a continuous and real-time settlement of fund transfers, individually on a transaction-by-transaction basis.

Srinagar (NVI): A Shikara turned turtle in Srinagar’s Dal lake today during BJP’s boat rally. However, all the people riding in the boat were rescued immediately.

The BJP had organized a shikara rally in wake of ongoing DDC elections in Dal Lake. The boat rally was led by BJP leaders including MoS Finance Anurag Thakur and Party’s National General Secretary Tarun Chugh.

One of the Shikaras capsized near Ghat Number 17, adjacent to Chaar Chinary. However, all were rescued immediately.

Those who were rescued from drowning were immediately shifted to a hospital for medical aid.

“We are thankful to those who rescued us. I don’t know how to swim but was rescued by some locals,” said a lady.

US tops 16 mn Covid cases, deaths nearing 3,00,000 mark

New Delhi (NVI): The Covid tally in the United States has hit a record 16 million cases, with the death toll nearing 3,00,000 mark even as the vaccine roll-out begins in the worst-affected country in the world.

Notably, the first vaccine was approved on Friday by the US Food and Drug Administration. The pandemic has affected daily life and devastated the US economy with millions of job losses reported.

More than 2,95,000 people have lost their lives due to Covid in the US. The recent surge of infections has again overwhelmed the healthcare systems in the country.

The US reported its highest daily cases, more than 2,32,700, on Friday.

Meanwhile, the global Covid cases have crossed the 71 million mark with India and Brazil at second and third places respectively.

PM Modi pays tributes to Parliament attack martyrs

 New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that India will never forget the attack on the Parliament that took place on this day 19 years ago while paying tributes to the martyrs.

“We will never forget the cowardly attack on our Parliament on this day in 2001. We recall the valour and sacrifice of those who lost their lives protecting our Parliament. India will always be thankful to them,” the PM wrote on Twitter.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also tweeted while saluting the people who lost their lives in the attack.

On December 13, 2001, five terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), stormed the Parliament complex in New Delhi and opened fire indiscriminately.

Nine persons, most of them from security forces, lost their lives while preventing the entry of terrorists inside the Parliament House Building. The incident took place around 40 minutes after Parliament was adjourned. About 100 members were present in the building.

All five terrorists were killed by security forces. The incident led to high level of tension between India and Pakistan.
