New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India crossed 95 lakh-mark and currently stands at 95,34,965 after 35,551 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,38,648 after 526 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

Maharashtra, with, 18,32,176 positive cases, remains the worst hit state in the country, followed by Karnataka with 8,87,667 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 8,69,412 positive cases.

New Delhi (NVI): International Day of Disabled Persons is observed every year on December 3, under the leadership of the United Nations (UN), to spread awareness about the issues of disabilities and how people are affected by it worldwide.

The day is also focused to promote the well-being and rights of people dealing with disabilities in every sphere of society and development.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through a resolution in 1992 declared December 3 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) also known as World Disability Day.

Since then, the day has been observed every year globally, to promote the ideas of involving people with disabilities in every aspect of social, political, economic and cultural life.

Every year, the day is observed with a specific theme. The official theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2020 is “Building back better: towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world by, for and with persons with disabilities.”

Apart from this, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will also organise a global awareness campaign with the theme “tell our stories, enable our rights”.

Nearly 1 billion people live with some form of disability. That accounts for approximately 15 per cent of the entire world’s population and 80 per cent live in the developing countries, as per the UN report.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, inequalities across the world widened, making it all the more important to take steps to reduce gaps in the society. While people with disabilities battled societal taboos before the onset of the pandemic, but the outbreak added to the inequalities among people based on their abilities.

In a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message on World Disabilities Day 2020 said, “As the world recovers from the pandemic, we must ensure that the aspirations and rights of persons with disabilities are included and accounted for in a -inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world.”

“This vision will only be achieved through active consultation with persons with disabilities and their representative organizations,” he added.

Coronavirus cases surpass 64.5 mn worldwide; US sees highest daily deaths since April

New Delhi (NVI): More than 64.5 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 14,92,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 41.4 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The United States has recorded 2,597 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours, which is its worst toll since April 15 and its second-worst toll of the pandemic so far.

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 13.9 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion have crossed 2,73,500.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 64 lakh-mark and stands at 6,436,650 while the number of deaths have surged past 1,74,000 in the country.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 22,046 to 1,106,789. The reported death toll rose by 479 to 17,602, the tally showed.

Mainland China reported 16 new Covid-19 cases on 2 December, up from nine cases a day earlier, the country’s national health authority said on Thursday.

Mexico’s health ministry reported 11,251 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and 800 additional fatalities, bringing the total in the country to 1,133,613 cases and 1,07,565 deaths.

New Delhi (NVI): India coronavirus tally has crossed the 9.5 million mark and currently stands at 95,34,965, with a single-day rise of 35,551 cases in last 24 hours, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll due to the virus rose to 1,38,648, with 526 patients succumbing to the infection since yesterday

Notably, a total of 89,73,373 patients have been cured or discharged so far, while the active cases stands at 4,22,943, as per the ministry data.

With this, the national recovery rate stood at 94.03 per cent, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.47 per cent in the country.

In the worst-affected Maharashtra, COVID-19 confirmed cases increased to 18,32,176 which include 47,357 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 89,611 and 16,95,208 recoveries.

Maharashtra is followed by Karnataka (8,87,667), Andhra Pradesh (8,69,412), Tamil Nadu (7,84,747), Kerala (6,14,643) and Uttar Pradesh (5,47,308).

Meanwhile, the national capital has registered 5,78,342 COVID-19 cases, while 9,342 people have died of the virus in Delhi.

Over 14.35 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to December 2. Of these 11,11,698 samples were tested yesterday, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data.

Furthermore, the Gujarat High Court yesterday directed the state government to make community service at coronavirus care centres mandatory for people found without protective masks. The order came on a petition seeking an increase in the fine amount for not wearing masks.

'Mahashay' Dharampal Gulati

New Delhi (NVI): ‘Mahashay’ Dharampal Gulati, the owner of masala brand MDH passed away today at the age of 98.

Gulati was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi where he suffered a cardiac arrest early morning and breathed his last at around 5.30 am, according to the reports.

He was born in 1923 in Pakistan’s Sialkot and later migrated to India. MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) was founded by his father Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia expressed his condolences and remembered Gulati as “India’s most inspiring entrepreneur.”

“MDH owner Dharm Pal Mahashay passed away this morning. I have never met such an inspiring and lively soul. May his soul rest in peace,” Sisodia tweeted.

Gulati moved to a shop in Karol Bagh in Delhi, after the partition of the country. He officially established MDH in 1959. His company also exports Indian spices to various parts of the world, including the UK, Europe, UAE, Canda, etc.

In 2019, Gulati was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award.

New Delhi (NVI): Indian Ambassador to Finland Raveesh Kumar today called on Finland Prime Minister Sanna Marin exchanged views to take the warm relations between the two countries to next level. They also discussed global action to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the occasion, Raveesh Kumar presented an embroidered silk scarf handmade in Lucknow to Marin, as token of the rich textile tradition of India.

“A real honour to call on the dynamic and charismatic Prime Minister of Finland @MarinSanna. Shared a token of our rich textile tradition- an embroidered silk scarf handmade in Lucknow,” Kumar said in a tweet.

On the occasion, Indian Embassy in Finland tweeted: “Ambassador @raveesh_kumar called on the Prime Minister of Finland @MarinSanna. A special gesture by PM Marin, demonstrating the warm Flag of IndiaFlag of Finland relations and a mutual desire to take it to the next level.”

The Finnish Government also appreciated the warm gesture by the Indian envoy, saying that both countries have good opportunities for cooperation in digitalisation, circular economy and sustainable development.

“Ambassador @raveesh_kumar made a courtesy visit to Prime Minister @MarinSanna. Finland and India have good opportunities for cooperation in digitalisation, circular economy and sustainable development. They also discussed global action to combat the COVID-19 pandemic,” it said in a tweet.

Kumar, who was the MEA spokesperson before, was appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Finland in June this year. He was succeeded by Anurag Srivastava.

IAF conducts ‘Combined Guided Weapons Firing’ exercise in Suryalanka

New Delhi (NVI): The Indian Air Force has conducted a ‘Combined Guided Weapons Firing’ exercise at Air Force Station Suryalanka in Andhra Pradesh, where indigenously developed Akash missile system along with Russian short-range Igla missiles was fired.

The exercise was conducted from November 23 to December 2. Both Akash and Igla missile systems were fired and engaged the Manoeuverable Expendable Aerial Targets (MEAT) providing near realistic training to the combat crew, the IAF said in a statement.

Air Marshal HS Arora, Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS), witnessed the Surface to Air Guided Weapons Firing, the IAF said.

“While the country continues to face the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Air Force continues to hone its operational capabilities with an eye on the prevailing security situation,” read an official statement, indirectly referring to the tense border situation with China and India’s effort to counter Beijing’s growing assertiveness in Indo-Pacific region.

In his address to the air warriors, the VCAS Air Marshal HS Arora commended the participating combat squadrons for their professionalism and also appreciated the efforts put in by the Station for organizing this exercise with requisite COVID precautions.

He urged all the air warriors to be ready to apply all lessons learnt in the CGWF 2020 to any emerging operational scenario.

India, Russia agree to deepen cooperation on counter-terrorism

New Delhi (NVI): India and Russia today held consultations on UNSC issues where both sides agreed to deepen cooperation on counter-terrorism at multilateral platforms.

“The Indian delegation briefed Russia on its priorities during its upcoming UNSC tenure and they decided to work closely together, given the common challenges faced and in keeping with their long-standing Special and Strategic Privileged Partnership,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

The consultations came ahead of India taking up the non-permanent seat at the UNSC for the period 2021-22.

The Indian side was led by Vikas Swarup, Secretary (West), MEA and the Russian delegation was led by Sergey Vasilyevich Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and included other Russian Foreign Ministry officials.

Indian delegation also included other officials from MEA and the Embassy of India in Moscow.

During the consultations, Russia welcomed India taking up the non permanent seat at the UNSC for the period 2021-22, the MEA said in a statement.

Srinagar (NVI): Jammu and Kashmir State Election Commissioner KK Sharma today said that 65.54 percent and 52.24 percent voter turnout was recorded yesterday in the second phase of vacant Panch and Sarpanch by-polls respectively.

The SEC informed that by-poll for Panch vacant seats were held in 343 constituencies including 317 from Kashmir division and 26 from Jammu division in the second phase.

Total 34,578 electors (including 17,987 males and 16,591 females) out of 52,757 eligible to vote at the 2nd phase of Panch By-Elections, exercised their franchise which began at 7 am and ended at 2 pm. Jammu division recorded 79.25% and Kashmir division recorded 63.92% voter turnout during the 2nd phase of Panch by-elections.

On vacant Sarpanch constituencies, 52.25% polling was registered during the 2nd phase, in 83 constituencies including 62 from Kashmir division and 21 from Jammu division. Total 55672 electors (including 29409 males and 26263 females) out of 106551, voted to choose their representatives. 71.19% polling was registered in Jammu division whereas 44.72% voting was recorded in Kashmir division.

In Jammu division, Jammu district recorded the highest voter turnout of 86.93% and 79.21% for Panch and Sarpanch by-polls respectively. Whereas in Kashmir division, Bandipora topped the Panch and Sarpanch voter turnout with 78.15% and 74.20% polling in second phase of elections, respectively.

SEC said that the polling was peaceful and smooth across the UT at all polling stations in the second phase.

J&K: Soldier accused of molestation sent to 7-day police remand

Uri (NVI): A local court today sent an Army soldier, accused of molestation, into seven days of police remand.

The J&K police produced him before Chief Judicial Magistrate, Uri on molestation charges here in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The accused hails from Doda, Jammu and is presently posted in Bande, Uri.

A police official said that the accused was booked in a case under section 457, 376 and 511 of IPC after a woman accused him of molestation.
