Cyclone alert issued for south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala coasts: IMD

New Delhi (NVI): A cyclone alert has been issued for south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala coasts predicting that weather conditions there could intensify into a Cyclonic Storm in coming hours, according to IMD.

“Cyclone Alert for South TN and South Kerala coasts-DD over BOB to intensify into a CS & cross Sri Lanka coast close to Trincomalee on 2 Dec. evening/night. To emerge into Gulf of Mannar on 3 Dec. morning. To cross south TN between Kanniyakumari and Pamban on 4th early morning,” India Meteorological Department tweeted.

The depression over southeast Bay of Bengal moved westwards, intensified into a deep depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal early this morning.

The weather system is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and likely to move west-northwestwards and cross Sri Lanka coast on December 2.

Furthermore, it is very likely to move nearly westwards thereafter, emerge into Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area on December 3 morning and move westward towards south Tamil Nadu coast.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has requested the Navy, Coast Guard and India Air Force to prepare ships and helicopters for rescue operations as the IMD has warned that depression in the Bay of Bengal is likely to turn into Cyclone Burevi.

Seven teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been sought by the state administration for the rescue and relief operation.

India rejects remarks by Trudeau, other Canadian leaders on farmers protest

New Delhi (NVI): India today rejected certain remarks by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and some other Canadian leaders on farmers’ protests in border areas of Delhi, saying that the comments are “ill-informed” and “unwarranted” while suggesting that “diplomatic conversations should not be misrepresented for political purposes”.

While responding to a media query on comments by Canadian leaders relating to farmers in India, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said: “We have seen some ill-informed comments by Canadian leaders relating to farmers in India. Such comments are unwarranted, especially when pertaining to the internal affairs of a democratic country. It is also best that diplomatic conversations are not misrepresented for political purposes.”

Trudeau, in online interaction with Canadians from the Sikh community, raised the issue of farmers’ protest while saying that the situation in “concerning”.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t start by recognising the news coming from India about the protest by farmers. The situation is concerning. We are all very worried about family and friends,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion of Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary yesterday, Trudeau said: “We know that’s a reality for many of you. Let me remind you, Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protesters. We believe in the process of dialogue. We’ve reached out through multiple means to the Indian authorities to highlight our concerns. This is a moment for all of us to pull together.”

With this, Trudeau has become the first international political leader to speak on farm protests in India that erupted last week.

Canada has a huge population from the Sikh community and has some top Sikh leaders in its cabinet. Before Trudeau, Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan had tweeted that the reports of farmers protests coming in from India are troubling.

“The reports of peaceful protesters being brutalized in India are very troubling. Many of my constituents have family there and are worried about the safety of their loved ones. Healthy democracies allow peaceful protest. I urge those involved to uphold this fundamental right,” he wrote on Twitter.

Pertinent to mention here, that thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have been protesting at Singhu and Tikri borders since November 26. They are demanding the rollback of recently passed farm bills by the Centre. They fear the new laws will affect the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and corporatise farming.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Railways Minister Piyush Goyal are holding talks with leaders of farmer unions today who have been protesting for the last six consecutive days.

PM wishes Nagaland on its Statehood Day

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extend greetings to the people of Nagaland on the occasion of their 58th Statehood Day and highlighted their contribution in India’s overall development.

Taking to Twitter, the PM Modi said, “Greetings to my sisters and brothers of Nagaland on their Statehood Day. The people of Nagaland are known for their courage and kindness. Their culture is exemplary and so is their contribution to India’s progress. Praying for Nagaland’s continuous development.”

Besides Prime Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah also greeted the people of the Nagaland.

Amit Shah on extended his greetings to the people of the state in a tweet wrote, “Greetings to our sisters and brothers of Nagaland on their Statehood Day. May this beautiful state scale new heights of progress in the years to come.”

On December 1, 1963, Nagaland was formally recognized as a separate state with Kohima being declared as its capital and became the 16th state of the country.

Prior to this, leaders of the north-eastern state and the central government reached an agreement to create a separate region of the Naga Hills. The State of Nagaland Act, 1962, was thus enacted by the Parliament to give Nagaland statehood.

Boat capsizes off Mangaluru, 6 missing

New Delhi (NVI): Six fishermen went missing after a deep-sea fishing boat capsized off the coast of Mangaluru, Karnataka this morning.

A total of 22 fishermen were onboard the boat which capsized in the Arabian Sea, while 16 others have been rescued so far, according to the media reports.

The search operation were carried out for missing persons by local fishermen and the coast guard, and the rescue operations are still underway.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had urged fishermen not to venture into the deep sea on December 3- 4, as it forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places over south coastal parts of the country and over Lakshadweep.

Board of Trade to hold meeting on Dec 2 over new foreign trade policy

New Delhi (NVI): The Board of Trade (BOT) will hold meeting with head of government departments on December 2, to discuss on the new foreign trade policy (FTP) (2021-26), the Ministry of Commerce said.

The top advisory body on external trade, will be chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal through video conference.

The virtual meeting will also discuss the strategies and measures to be taken in order to take forward domestic manufacturing and exports.

“BOT platform provides an opportunity to have regular discussion and consultation with trade and industry and advise the government on policy measures related to FTP in order to achieve the objective of boosting India’s trade,” the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

It also provides a platform to state governments and UTs to articulate their perspective on trade policy, and also to the government for apprising them about international developments affecting India’s trade potential.

During the meeting, board of trade will take an overview of the export and import performance, investment promotion strategy for Atma Nirbhar Bharat (including Public Procurement – Make in India).

Apart from this, the trade remedies – recent measures and steps taken, new logistics policy, trade facilitation measures undertaken by customs, reforms and initiatives since last BOT, GeM – coverage and expansion, and will consider various suggestions regarding the Foreign trade Policy.

Ministers of State for Commerce and Industry Som Parkash and Hardeep Singh Puri along with secretaries of departments of the government, CEOs, Niti Aayog, Heads of various government bodies, representatives of Apex industry and Export Promotion Councils who are members of the BOT will also address the meeting.

Nagrota gunfight: Truck driver ferrying terrorists still missing

Srinagar (NVI): Eleven days after joint forces neutralized four Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists in an operation at Ban toll plaza on Jammu-Srinagar Highway near Nagrota in Jammu district, the truck driver who was ferrying those terrorists is still at large.

Pertinently, on November 20 last month, a gunfight broke out between joint forces and the terrorists near Ban toll plaza after a truck was intercepted by forces.

All the four terrorists boarding the truck were killed in the pre-dawn gunfight; however, the truck driver managed to escape from the spot and is still absconding.

Two policemen of the counter insurgent Special Operations Group (SOG) Kuldeep Raj of Akhnoor in Jammu district and Muhammad Ishaq Malik of Neel Qasim Banihal in Ramban district were also injured during the encounter.

SSP Jammu Sridhar Patil declined to comment on the issue. When contacted by NVI, Patil said, “There is nothing important to share anything about the subject.”

A police official, however, on condition of anonymity said that truck driver may have managed to escape from the spot during the mayhem. He said most probably the driver either disappeared in the forest or may have been picked up by another vehicle.

He said that police have intensified searches but the driver has not been arrested as yet. The official added that the identity of the driver is being ascertained and efforts are on to trace him.

Divulging information about the Ban Plaza encounter, IGP Jammu had informed media that in the three hour long operation, all the four terrorists were killed while 11 AK-47 rifles, three pistols, 29 live grenades, six UBGL grenades, mobile phones, compass, pithy bags and other ammunition were recovered from the slain terrorists.

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India crossed 94 lakh-mark and currently stands at 94,62,810 after 31,118 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,37,621 after 482 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-affected Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases surpassed 18,22,890 followed by Karnataka with 8,8,897 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,68,064 positive cases.

Sandeep Kataria becomes first Indian to be appointed as global CEO of Bata

New Delhi (NVI): Footwear major, Bata Shoe Organization, has announced the appointment of Sandeep Kataria as the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately.

With this, Kataria becomes the first Indian to be elevated to the global role of the of Bata. He takes over from Alexis Nasard, who is stepping down after almost five years in the role.

Kataria was previously the CEO of Bata India. World AIDS Day 2020: Significance, theme & history

New Delhi (NVI): World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1, worldwide, to raise awareness about the Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) disease.

On this day, people unite in the fight against AIDS, to show support to those who are living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died from AIDS.

AIDS is a chronic disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This disease is a sexually transmitted disease and it can also transmit through blood transmission and other things.

There are several symptoms of HIV and some of them include joint pain, fever, muscle ache, weight loss, among others. However, the disease is not entirely curable but there are few protective measures that one must adopt in their everyday life to prevent the contract of the disease.

According to the website of hiv.org, this year’s theme for World AIDS Day is ‘Ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic: Resilience and Impact.’

This theme is a reminder that people can achieve a thing, if they make a joint effort to deliver high-quality services for treatment and prevention of HIV, to the ones who are in need.

Nearly 38 million people living with HIV around the globe. Since its discovery in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in human history, as per the United Nations AIDS report.

Taking to Twitter, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message on World AIDS Day 2020 said, “Health is a human right – and universal health coverage must be a top investment priority. “To overcome COVID-19 and end AIDS, the world must stand in solidarity and share responsibility.”

The World AIDS Day was first observed in 1987 by James W Bunn and Thomas Netter. Both were public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the WHO. It was also the first-ever international day for global health.

Coronavirus cases exceed 63.2 mn worldwide; recovered cases top 40.5 mn

New Delhi (NVI): More than 63.2 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 14,67,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 40.5 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 13.5 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion have crossed 2,68,000.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 63 lakh-mark and stands at 6,335,878 while the number of deaths have surged past 1,73,000 in the country.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 13,604 to 1,067,473. The reported death toll rose by 388 to 16,636.

Meanwhile, Jakarta governor and his deputy have both tested positive for coronavirus.

Indonesia confirmed a national record case rise on 29 November, with 6,267 new infections reported. There are a total of 538,883 cases in the country, and 16,945 people have died.

The head of the World Health Organization said on Monday that Mexico is in “bad shape” regarding the coronavirus as infections and deaths surge.

Mexico’s coronavirus death tally, the fourth highest in the world, stands at almost 106,000. Confirmed cases are in excess of 1.1 million.

In addition to this, Vietnam reported its first local transmission of Covid-19 in nearly three months on Monday, with officials scrambling to prevent a wider outbreak in the country’s most populous city.
