New Delhi (NVI): The Scottish Parliament has approved plans to make sanitary products free for all women, the first nation in the world to do so, in an effort to end “period poverty”.
The first stage of the plan has been approved. If the bill moves past the second phase, free menstrual products like pads and tampons will be available in places such as pharmacies, community centres and youth clubs in the country.
Parties have backed the Period Products (Free Provision) Scotland Bill, which was introduced by Monica Lennon, a Scottish Parliament member. She first produced the bill in 2017.
Scotland became the first country to provide free sanitary products in schools, colleges and universities in 2018.
Scottish government estimates that the initiative could cost more than 24 million pounds or $31 million annually.
