Srinagar, Jan 13 (NVI): Sonamarg, the picturesque gem of Central Kashmir, is abuzz with excitement as it prepares for the historic inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.
The town has been beautifully decorated, with national flags and banners lining the roads, as locals eagerly await the opening of this transformative infrastructure project.
The 6.5 km-long Z-Morh Tunnel, located between Gagangeer and Sonamarg, promises to revolutionize travel in the region by providing all-weather connectivity to Sonamarg, a popular tourist destination that has often remained cut off during harsh winters. By reducing the travel time to just 20-25 minutes, the tunnel will ensure year-round accessibility, boosting tourism and benefiting the livelihoods of local communities.
“This tunnel is a lifeline for us. During winters, our businesses would suffer because of road closures, but now we are hopeful that tourists will come here throughout the year,” said Riyaz Ahmad, a local shopkeeper in Sonamarg.
Shabnum Jan, a teacher in Ganderbal, shared, “The Z-Morh Tunnel is not just a project; it’s a ray of hope for our students and residents. All-weather connectivity means better access to schools, markets, and healthcare, even in the harshest of winters.”
The tunnel also plays a key role in connecting to the under-construction Zojila Tunnel, which will provide seamless access to Ladakh. Experts believe that these infrastructure developments will not only boost tourism but also strengthen economic ties and regional integration.
“This is a game-changer for the people of Sonamarg and the surrounding areas. The improved connectivity will attract more tourists, create jobs, and uplift the local economy,” said Tariq Hameed, a hotel owner.
As the town gears up for the grand inauguration, locals are optimistic about the opportunities the tunnel will bring. The Z-Morh Tunnel is seen as a symbol of progress and a step toward unlocking the untapped potential of Sonamarg and its surrounding areas.(News Vibes of India)
