Jammu: A bus carrying Hindu pilgrims to the revered shrine town of Katra in Jammu and Kashmir was attacked by some terrorists in Reasi district, resulting in the death of 9 passengers and injuries to 33.
Coincidentally, the terrorists struck just when, in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was getting ready to take oath for the third time along with his new Council of Ministers on Sunday evening.
Also, the incident occurred just before India and Pakistan were to face each other in the World Cup T20 match in New York.
The 53-seat bus was moving from Shiv Khori temple to Katra, where the revered Vaishno Devi Temple is located.
At around 6.10 PM, some hiding terrorists fired at the bus in Pouni area of Reasi district, police said.
Some bullets hit the driver who lost control over the bus and the vehicle fell into a deep gorge, Reasi Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma said.
Eight deaths have been confirmed while 33 were injured who have been referred to various hospitals, she told the media.
The victims were mostly from Uttar Pradesh state and on pilgrimage.
A hunt has been launched to track down the attackers.
