New Delhi (NVI): Cyclone Amphan, one of the worst storms over the Bay of Bengal in years, has wreaked havoc killing at least 72 people in West Bengal and destroying thousands of homes after it made landfall on the Bengal coast yesterday.

Massive structural damage has been caused due to heavy rains and high winds, wherein airport hangars in Kolkata collapsed and runways were flooded.

Various dilapidated buildings also crashed in Kolkata and in other parts of the state, whereas Odisha is assessing the damage caused by the cyclone, which has also impacted its coastal districts.

Road clearance and restoration work by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are underway.

In addition to this, NDRF is moving additional teams in the state to speed up restoration work, especially in Kolkata.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised people against going out till further orders.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “We are closely monitoring the Cyclone Amphan situation and are in continuous touch with concerned authorities. Have spoken to the chief ministers of Odisha and West Bengal over the cyclone situation and assured them of all possible help from the Centre.”

The cyclone, which reduced in strength, has now further weakened into a depression, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
