Coronavirus cases surge past 107.7 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 107.7 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 2,367,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 60.2 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 27.3 million, while the number of fatalities caused due to the deadly contagion have exceeded 4,75,000 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 9.7 million-mark and stands at 9,713,909 while the number of deaths have surged past 2,36,000.

Furthermore, Mexico’s health ministry reported 1,474 new confirmed deaths from Covid-19, bringing its total to 171,234.

Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, has gone back into lockdown as a “circuit-breaker” to try to halt the spread of a hotel quarantine-linked outbreak. The city will go back into Stage 4 restrictions for five days.

Meanwhile, a coronavirus variant identified in the Brazilian Amazon may be three times more contagious but early analysis suggests vaccines are still effective against it, the country’s health minister said on Thursday.

Portugal has extended a lockdown until March 1 or perhaps later to tackle its worst surge of Covid-19 infections since the pandemic began.
