Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police has nipped in the bud an attempt by Pakistan to resurrect the separatist Hurriyat Conference and JKLF as it arrested 10 people here under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

More arrests are likely, the police said tonight as it pursues investigation into the conspiracy.

The police swooped upon a hotel here yesterday after receiving intelligence input that some former terrorists of JKLF and activists of the now-defunct Hurriyat Conference were holding a meeting to discuss their revival.

Around 30 people were present there, including former JKLF terrorist Yasin Bhat, former Hurriyat Chairman Prof Abdul Gani Bhat’s son Jahangir Bhat and former Hurriyat leader Maulvi Abbas Ansari’s son Masroor Abbas Ansari, according to sources.

They were detained and an inquiry was started as “prima facie it came out that they were planning to revive JKLF & hurriyat”, the police said yesterday.

Giving an update tonight, the police said in a tweet that “Ten(10) accused have been formally arrested so far in this ‘JKLF-Hurriyat revival conspiracy’ Case.”

It said cases have been registered under sections 10,13 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act & section 121-A of IPC.

It is believed that these people were making an attempt to revive terror outfit JKLF and pro-Pakistan Hurriyat Conference at the behest of Islamabad with the aim of re-igniting separatist movement and disturb peace in Kashmir, according to sources.
