Srinagar, Dec 23(NVI): As the Kashmir Valley shivers under sub-zero temperatures, Christmas cheer is spreading warmth across the Valley.

From the bustling markets of Srinagar to the snow-clad resorts of Gulmarg, the festive season has brought a mix of joy and excitement, captivating both locals and tourists.

Markets in Srinagar are buzzing with activity as families throng shops to buy Christmas decorations, cakes and gifts. “The spirit of Christmas lifts our hearts even in this freezing cold,” said Zahoor Ahmad, a shopkeeper in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk. “It’s wonderful to see locals and tourists coming together to celebrate.”

The Holy Family Catholic Church in Srinagar is the center of Christmas festivities. The church, adorned with lights, stars, and wreaths, is preparing to host midnight Mass. Father Roy Mathew, the parish priest, told NVI: “Despite the harsh weather, we are witnessing an incredible turnout this year. Christmas is a celebration of hope, and people here need that warmth and unity.”

Tourist hotspots like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are the epicenters of a white Christmas experience. Resorts and hotels are hosting special Christmas-themed events, including bonfires, traditional Kashmiri music, and festive feasts. “This is my first time spending Christmas in Kashmir, and it feels magical,” said Rebecca Sharma, a tourist from Delhi. “The snow, the warmth of Kashmiri hospitality, and the festive lights make it feel like a fairytale.”

Locals are also embracing the festive season, blending Kashmiri traditions with Christmas celebrations. “We may not traditionally celebrate Christmas, but the joy it brings is universal,” said Nazir Dar, a resident of Gulmarg. “We are lighting candles, decorating trees, and enjoying the festive food. It’s a great time for families and friends to come together.”

Even the freezing temperatures, with Srinagar recording -3.6°C and Gulmarg at -4.8°C, haven’t dampened the spirit. “It’s colder than I expected, but that’s the charm of a Kashmiri Christmas,” said Anita D’Souza, a tourist from Mumbai. “We even had a snowball fight on Christmas Eve and it was unforgettable.”

Many local businesses and restaurants have joined in the celebrations, introducing Christmas-themed menus and events. In Pahalgam, bakeries are serving special plum cakes and cinnamon rolls, while in Srinagar, cafes are offering warm drinks to beat the chill.

Despite the challenges posed by the severe cold wave, the people of Kashmir are embracing the season with open arms. “Christmas is about spreading love and joy,” said Shazia Khan, a resident of Srinagar. “It doesn’t matter what faith you belong to; the happiness it brings touches everyone’s heart.” (News Vibes of India)
