Srinagar, Mar 09 (NVI) : Congress leaders and party workers on Monday staged a protest at the party headquarters on MA Road here against the India–US deal, alleging that it would adversely impact farmers and small businesses in the country.
Bandipora Assembly MLA Nizamuddin Bhat, along with party leaders Waseem Shahla, Yasir Nisar Mundu, Mohammad Shafi, Sharif-ud-Din Beigh, Mohammad Hussain Wada, Abdul Hamid, Waleed Karra, Nazir Ahmed Lone, Manzoor Ahmed and around 60–70 workers participated in the protest.
The protesters raised slogans against the deal, claiming it would cause major economic losses to India. They alleged that the agreement would threaten the livelihood of small farmers due to the influx of agricultural products from the United States and increase competitive pressure on domestic industries.
The protesters also expressed concern that the deal could lead to expensive energy imports as India may not be able to procure cheaper oil from Russia.
According to the party leaders, the agreement would be detrimental to Indian farmers and small businesses.
The protesters attempted to march outside the party headquarters; however, police stopped them at the gate and did not allow them to proceed further.—(KNC)
