New Delhi, Apr 27: President of the United Nations General Assembly Ms. Annalena Baerbock will arrive here tomorrow on a day-long visit during which the West Asia crisis and challenges to the international order are expected to be discussed.
She will hold bilateral meetings with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and meet with representatives from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the UN Country Team in India.
Considering the global crisis caused by the war in West Asia, the issue is expected to figure prominently in the discussions Baerbock will have with Jaishankar.
The war was triggered after the US and Israel launched air strikes on Iran on February 28, assassinating its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, followed by several other leaders.
Iran retaliated by targeting America’s military and economic interests in the Gulf region.
For over three weeks now, a ceasefire is in place but it has helped in no way in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which is extremely critical for global movement of petroleum products.
Choking of the Strait has resulted in energy shortages in many countries around the world, including India which imports a large chunk of its petroleum products, like oil and LPG, from the West Asian regional countries.
From India, she will travel to China for a two-day visit from 29-30 April.
“As India and China are two key supporters of the United Nations and multilateralism, the President of the General Assembly will discuss current global issues and challenges for the international order and stress the importance of upholding the UN Charter, strengthening the United Nations, and intensifying multilateral cooperation on all three pillars of the United Nations,” said a statement issued by the UN Information Office here today.
In China, the President of the General Assembly will hold bilateral meetings with Vice President Han Zheng and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
She will also meet with the UN Country Team in China, the statement said. (NVI)
