Heatwave Tightens Grip on Kashmir; Srinagar Sizzles at 34°C

Srinagar, Jul 4 (NVI): Heatwave-like conditions continued across Kashmir on Saturday as maximum temperatures remained significantly above normal, with Srinagar recording 34 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a maximum temperature of 34.0 degrees Celsius, 4.4 degrees above normal, while Qazigund registered 32.8 degrees Celsius, the highest departure among major weather stations at 5.3 degrees above normal, the IMD said.

Kupwara recorded 33.5 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees above normal, Kokernag 30.9 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees above normal), Gulmarg 24.4 degrees Celsius (3.9 degrees above normal) and Pahalgam 26.9 degrees Celsius, 2.2 degrees above the seasonal average.

Night temperatures also remained above normal across the Valley. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees above normal, while Pahalgam registered the highest positive departure in minimum temperature at 3.1 degrees above normal.

In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees above normal. Katra recorded 34 degrees Celsius, Banihal 31.2 degrees Celsius, Batote 28.2 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah 31.4 degrees Celsius, all above their respective normal temperatures.

The IMD said most parts of Jammu and Kashmir remained dry during the past 24 hours, with only a few places receiving light rainfall.

The above-normal temperatures across most parts of the Union Territory have led to hot and humid conditions, particularly in the Kashmir Valley, where several stations recorded departures of 2 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal, the IMD said.(NVI)
